A friend of mine is looking at these and asked me what I knew about them. The answer is that I know NOTHING about them. I was hoping maybe you guys had some insight I could pass along...

Haven't shot one, but the norinco AKs have a very good reputation. Many AK enthusiasts pay a premium for them.

MAK90, milled or stamped?
Either is good, just different.
I like mini 14's for the right price.

I've owned several MAK'S they are very fine rifles in the AK line.
if it was me I would take the MAK.

I'd get the mini. At lest you can get spare parts to get her going.

+1 to grabbing the MAK if it is at all reasonably priced.

There are plenty of MAK90 rifles out there that are junk and beat to hell. Know how to inspect the barrel.

This is a stamped receiver.  All Chinese guns are 1.6 mm thick. And get the AK if the price is right.

Milled?  Get it.
Is the back of the receiver square or angled?

Norinco yes, the Mini 14, absolutely not.

No but like my FN I could never get the right part. Way to may variants. That's why I have AR's & Mini's

Can't be both.
It's either milled or stamped 1.6mm.

As he said, all Norinco AK's had a heavier receiver than the originals.  1.6mm is a stamped, nothing wrong with it.

That being said, there are two variants: straight cut (Just like a regular AK) and slant cut (MAK specific) that may make replacing the ugly thumbhole plank stock more challenging.  I have one of each, the straight accepted original Russian wood, the slant needed some custom stuff from Ironwood Designs.  Other than that, virtually identical and quite possibly the nicest non-boutique AK you can buy.  Polished bolt, blued instead of painted, chrome barrels, nothing to not like.

Mini's are typically shit.

Norinco 100%

You will read quite a few disparaging things here and elsewhere about the Mini. They are all true.

I LOVE my Mak 90 and I have a stamped reveiver, the milled are highly sought after (except for the fact they have a slant cut receiver and you stock options ARE limited) If you can pick one up for $750-$850 that's a good deal!

There is an AK section where you can ask questions but not do price checks
