I can't find my friggin' XP Pro disk, so I might have to buy another disk. Should I stick with XP or spend the extra cash for Windows 7? Computer is hella old, 2gb RAM, good video card, but that's about it. |
|
Don't buy Win7; buy a completely new computer. It's time.

New boxed versions of Windows 7 stopped shipping yesterday so if you want one grab it now.
|
|
Why do you need another disk for XP?
If all you're doing is GIMP and old games I wouldn't spend extra for 7 personally. But I would consider disconnecting the PC from the internet. |

View Quote I bought a XP Pro disk with unused key from an Arfcommer. Installed it, been running for awhile, but I partitioned the C drive too small, so it got full and now it's crashing/unstable. I have an older HD I want to reinstall XP on, but I can't find the motherfucking disk which should be right in this motherfucking drawer and I've been tearing the house apart. So, I'm looking at buying another XP pro on Ebay. |

Order a refurbished Dell with win 7 from walmart. It will probably be cheaper than trying to buy win 7. Hold out on spending big money till win 9 or whatever they call it is out. |

If you're as cheap as I am, shop the big box stores that sell computers for floor model closeouts. I picked up a nice Lenovo for a fraction of the cost at Staples.

Linux Mint Debian. I'm on a Mac laptop right now, so what do I do, DL Debian, burn a CD, and pop it in? yes, but you have to have your bios set to boot from the drive. never messed with a mac, but it should run linux quite well. Lubuntu might be a better option for a laptop since it was designed around laptop use. I'm using lubuntu now on a old toshiba core 2 duo I thought was ready for the junk pile as it wouldn't even run the OS it came with worth a damn (vista). works great now. |

Problem is, the PC crashes before I can launch things. It keeps coming up with "Windows just recovered from a serious error" and then in goes black and reboots. It's FUBAR'd. Best I can hope for is to get a new XP Pro disk, install it on the old HD, use my newer HD as a slave, so I can keep all my old porn files. |

Get win 7, convert xp-pro to a virtual machine, and have the best of both worlds.

Linux Mint Debian. I'm on a Mac laptop right now, so what do I do, DL Debian, burn a CD, and pop it in? Yes, you can try it out by running the OS off the CD. If you like it then install it using the same disc. If you have a good internet connection, DL only takes 15-20 minutes. The installed version will be soo much faster than running of the CD. You can also keep your Mac OS and run a Dual boot to switch back and forth between operating systems. It's free!!! Plus when they update the version it just installs the the update (rolling update) to your system instead of reinstalling the latest edition like other Linux systems (Ubuntu, regular Mint) http://www.linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php |

New PC and/or Windows 7.
If you don't care about it not having any horsepower, and it's just a secondary PC to play with, that's fine, but don't install XP again. |

(and if you ever find the XP disk you can run your games in a virtual machine or something. i doubt they're very intensive). Try "Xubuntu" or "Mint XFCE" |

I'd switch off of XP purely because of the security risk. Microsoft stopped supporting XP (and thus, stopped releasing security related patches) around last July or so.

For the cost of a new computer you can buy those parts, but the upgraded versions. If you know how to do it, I would build a budget PC. Just grab an Intel i5 with motherboard, decent power supply, and decent graphics card. Should be pretty inexpensive honestly OR image your current computer, upgrade the harddrive, and reinstall that image on the harddrive. Done. |
