For about the last 8-10 years I've made a tradition of watching "Saving Private Ryan", usually alone, always with moist eyes as I attempt to remember our fallen countrymen through all wars, conflicts, etc.
I didn't serve but I do observe the day in it's true meaning. |

Nelson passed away February 28, 2013 at 91 years of age and was not a member of this fine forum, but perhaps he did earn an honorary membership on a small island named IWO JIMA. We need to remember these greatest generation heroes around our campfires.
Printed in Brownwoodnews.com on a happier occasion: "VFW Post 3278 honored Cpl. Nelson Turnbow by awarding him the Iwo Jima Veteran’s Commemorative Medal on Friday, August 19, 2011, recognizing his moral courage for defending the Untied States. On December 7, 1941, naval and air forces of Imperial Japan attacked the USN Pacific Fleet Base at Pearl Harbor, HI. Three years later, on February 19, 1945 a young Marine named Cpl. Nelson Turnbow was deployed to help invade Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima was one of the most heavily defended Japanese islands in the Central Pacific. By March 16th the Japanese forces had been destroyed in one of the hallmark battles in Marine Corps history. On September 2, 1945 Japan surrendered. As Turnbow recognized his fellow veterans and thanked them for their service he stated “I am not a hero, but I have seen many heroes. I don’t like to be called a hero because it takes away from those who did things above duty and a number of them did.” Semper Fi CPL Nelson Turnbow USMC Great Memorial Day week thread! Thanks OP |

Died from non-combat related injuries in Iraq, 5 July 2007. Fucked me all up. Ran PT with him and a few other guys on 4th of July, a day later he's dead. Also, I never met Sgt. 1st Class Nathan L. Winder (KIA 26 June 2007), but had the honor to attend his memorial service. But god bless all who died over there. |

Pfc. John Hutto
Spc4. Andy Alaniz KIA 2-27-91, Jalibah Airfield, Iraq. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. I miss you, Brothers and look forward to meeting again at the final muster. |

Everyone I personally knew that deployed made it home. However, there were countless others that didn't. I was not informed of their names, or even the exact number of them, but was informed of every one escorted down Disney Drive while on my tour.
