This coming Monday, 26 MAY 14, is Memorial Day. It isn't about barbecues, going to the lake, school ending, or another weekly sale from your favorite retailer. It's about remembering those men and women who've given their lives in military service to America. In light of that, please post the names of your family, friends, or brothers (and sisters)-in-arms who've made the ultimate sacrifice for us, so that others may know of them and to remind us all of the true cost of our freedom.

I'll start:

CPT Pierre Piche, KIA 15 NOV 03, Mosul, Iraq

CPT Jeremy Chandler, KIA 11 AUG 05, Tarin Khowt, Afghanistan

SSG Hector Perez, KIA 24 JUL 03, Al Hawijah, Iraq

SSG Michael Deason, KIA 31 AUG 06, Ad Dwar, Iraq

SGT Ariel Rico, KIA 28 NOV 03, Mosul, Iraq

SGT Michael Acklin, KIA 15 NOV 03, Mosul, Iraq

I served with all six of those men in the 101st ABN DIV (AASLT). RIP, my brothers.

Who do you want us to remember?

For about the last 8-10 years I've made a tradition of watching "Saving Private Ryan", usually alone, always with moist eyes as I attempt to remember our fallen countrymen through all wars, conflicts, etc.

I didn't serve but I do observe the day in it's true meaning.

Nelson passed away February 28, 2013 at 91 years of age and was not a member of this fine forum, but perhaps he did earn an honorary membership on a small island named IWO JIMA. We need to remember these greatest generation heroes around our campfires.
Printed in Brownwoodnews.com on a happier occasion:
"VFW Post 3278 honored Cpl. Nelson Turnbow by awarding him the Iwo Jima Veteran’s Commemorative Medal on Friday, August 19, 2011, recognizing his moral courage for defending the Untied States.

On December 7, 1941, naval and air forces of Imperial Japan attacked the USN Pacific Fleet Base at Pearl Harbor, HI. Three years later, on February 19, 1945 a young Marine named Cpl. Nelson Turnbow was deployed to help invade Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima was one of the most heavily defended Japanese islands in the Central Pacific. By March 16th the Japanese forces had been destroyed in one of the hallmark battles in Marine Corps history. On September 2, 1945 Japan surrendered.

As Turnbow recognized his fellow veterans and thanked them for their service he stated “I am not a hero, but I have seen many heroes. I don’t like to be called a hero because it takes away from those who did things above duty and a number of them did.”
Semper Fi CPL Nelson Turnbow USMC

Great Memorial Day week thread! Thanks OP

SSG Wilson, best squad leader a young dumbass could have. Taught me much, about soldiering and life. So many memories, everything from asschewings and smoke sessions to brews out in Fayetteville and watching his cats for the weekend. Pretty much went from the orphanage to his new family, the U.S. Army. KIA in Iraq.

SFC Hill, hell on wheels if you were fucked up. Deployed with us to make sure our bonuses went through and our pay was on time. We got off the same plane in Atlanta coming home on mid tour leave. She felt a little out of breath, and the airport medics came to check her out. We all stopped to chat with her, but she just admonished us to hurry up to catch our connecting flights. When I got back to Baghdad a few weeks later, they asked me if I'd heard the news. SFC Hill had died from a clot developed during the 18 hours of flight time.

SGT Anthony Vinnedge, C Troop, 2/107th CAV OHARNG

Died from non-combat related injuries in Iraq, 5 July 2007.

Fucked me all up. Ran PT with him and a few other guys on 4th of July, a day later he's dead.

Also, I never met Sgt. 1st Class Nathan L. Winder (KIA 26 June 2007), but had the honor to attend his memorial service.

But god bless all who died over there.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

I miss you, Brothers and look forward to meeting again at the final muster.
