As in, God just stuck a spokes of the earth. No gradual slowing, just full stop. Discuss. |

Death race to the poles to survive. Permanent sun on one side, permanent night on the other.
Oh, and the Glock carbine would be released for sale. |

What in the name of a frontal lobotomy passes for public education these days?
Newtons 2nd Law, that's what'd happen. We'd go from being motionless relative to the surface of the earth to continuing on at approx. 1,000 mph. And that's to say nothing about what the sudden stop would do the actual structure of the planet itself. I suspect there'd be an asteroid belt where the 3rd planet was. |

Sunny side would fry and dark side would freeze.
Pretty much a quick death for most all living thing. Would there be any gravity without the spinning? |

At its equator, the earth is rotating at 1,037 MPH.
What happens when an airplane moving at 1,037 MPH slams into a mountain? |

If gravity was a function of centrifugal force there would be nothing on the surface. As centrifugal force has a tendancy to sling things away. |

This history channel already covered this(stupidly)
You'd have 1000mph winds and inertia throwing shit around. Of course it would take something like a impact event to stop the earths rotation like that, so getting slammed into the wall is the least of your worries. Edit: Here we go: it starts at 15:00 |

You would have to have enough velocity to beat gravity. I didn't do any googling, but I am guessing since we are on the planet currently we wouldn't go into orbit. You probably wouldn't like the free flight though.

Stopped relative to what frame of reference?
Stop spinning on its axis? Everything suddenly is sliding or flying around the planet at 1000 MPH at the equator, and less at higher and lower latitudes. People and things will get seriously beat to shit from that. Stop orbiting the sun? That's 66,000 MPH change in velocity. We just fly off or get crushed depending on where we are on the planet. Stop moving relative to the galaxy? That's a few hundred thousand MPH. It'd be quick and painless except for those who got launched into space and didn't hit anything. |

LOL So many snide smug fucking comments yet no one could be bothered to answer the question. The answer is YES there would still be gravity. Horrible, horrible gravity that would turn the Earth into a perfect sphere resulting in massive worldwide flooding. Here's a good desc: http://www.universetoday.com/66570/what-would-happen-if-the-earth-stopped-spinning/ Tip: If you don't know how to swim, start learning! It will come in handy if you survive the oceans sloshing around at 1000 kmh and don't get hit by anything else! |

I don't think there's such a thing as centrifugal force, or better stated, it's a false force. I seem to recall this from Highschool Physics about 20 years ago. Centripetal force is a true force, but centrifugal isn't. Has that all changed in the past 20 years? |

Every single thing on the surface of the Earth would suddenly and violently start moving east at 1,000 MPH in an instant, at least at the equator.
What could possibly go wrong? |
