I'll miss you Ashton. We bonded together, you always greeted me in the hallway when I woke up, left for work, and came back from work. I was a sucker for you and spoiled you petting and scratching until you had enough.

Last January I found a couple watery spots of blood in the bathtub and we had to take him to the vet for emergency cystolithotomy surgery because of bladder stones. That gave us another 1 year and 4 months together. Smart kitty to leave it where I'd see it.

When I came home from work yesterday he was laying on his side, really laboring to breathe. His breathing had been raspy since a little before the surgery. I petted him for about 15 minutes but he kept getting up and moving like he didn't want me to pet him. I watched him awhile and he sat up to look out the back door like he loved to do. A little later I was brushing my teeth when he came to the doorway and laid down looking bad again. I petted him for at least 30 minutes talking to him and he seemed a little better and moved around to a couple different spots after awhile. The next time I saw him not much later he was laying on his side, dead.

R.I.P. Ashton
Dec. 2003 - April 22nd 2014

As his memorial I'm going to post some pictures of him so he lives on the Internet forever.

Happy Face (2004):

Sitting Proud (2005):

Laying Down (2005):

Licking Lips (2005):

Hiding in the Grass (2009):

Ashton loved to go outside while we supervised him. He got me to spoil him there, too. He had a period where he'd get mighty darn pissed when we picked him up to bring back inside. This picture is the "shade garden" he liked, before you tell me to cut the grass!

Not Amused (2012):

Christmas Kitty (2012):

Enough Pictures Already! (2012):

Dang Dog! (2013):

He didn't take well to sharing the house while we took care of my brother's dog. That was the closest he voluntarily got to her. He jumped up from the backside of the couch. I think you can tell his look of disgust.

He loved to hop up in your lap and lay between your legs as soon as you popped the recliner up. He kept my legs warm on winter mornings while I read a book and drank coffee.

I love you Ashton.

these threads kill me.

I have an orange tabby that i pulled from his mother in may 1999.  He will be 15 in a couple of weeks.  Right now you couldnt guess his age, he gets around fine and is healthy.

But i know his time is coming soon.  I hope he will be one of those 25+ year old cats.

But enough about mine.  Sorry for your loss.

Man that's rough.. Glad you got to spend some time with him at the end. I understand what you mean when you say you were petting him and he kept moving around like he didn't want you to let him or he couldn't get comfortable. It's a sign they are in pain and near the end. He is not in pain any more, he is in a warm, fuzzy, dry, grass filled place with plenty of treats and endless glasses of water to push off the table without anybody getting upset..

Little furry ninjas take up a pretty big spot in your heart, sorry you lost him.

I'm sorry for your loss. I highly recommend people look at pet food, and try to go with American made, and sourced over Chinese sourced. We have had cats get tumours, and other internal problems from the food from China. I now feed my pets better than I eat, and it's worth it.

Having just lost my best friend Wizard in early February, I know what you're experiencing.
Remember the good times, remember the loving times, remember the warm companionship.

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Mary Elizabeth Frye

My heartfelt condolences, brother.

My daughter has a cat that looks exactly like yours and he's sleeping on my bed now.  His mother who was only 4, who I spent a lot of money on surgery saving just vapor locked under our Christmas tree the day before last Christmas.  It's tough but remember the good memories.  I'm not a cat person but I find myself attached.  The one on my bed right now will be there until morning and if I get too close in the middle of the night he'll swat me and want to be let outside in the morning.  Sorry for your loss OP.

]Reminds me of my trouble maker...

Losing a pet is especially hard because we just live so much longer than they do. But look at it from his side. He lived his entire life being loved unconditionally. He was a lucky guy.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and warm reception. I enjoyed seeing and reading about all your little buddies, too.

I read the Rainbow Bridge poem, which managed to put a smile on my face.

ar-jedi, I missed your thread, it's easy to do here. I'm glad I was able to read it now, you have a beautiful family and home. So many adorable pics you have. We have a leopard-skin window-sill lay similar to yours. Ashton loved hopping in boxes, too. That pic drinking out of faucet, Ashton loved to drink out of the bathtub faucet. I'd give in multiple times per day, as he'd follow me in. He used to like taking showers with us, though he'd sometimes have enough and start clawing before shampoo completely washed out.

Thank you all, it was too difficult to post this last night. I'll check back tomorrow, have a few more memories I'd like to share about my time with Ashton.
