Well that 'bout says it all. I love it.

If I had this cable modem 7 years ago I never would have gotten married.
Did I say that out loud? |
|
A cable connection is a one-way trip. You can't ever go back.
Just try visiting a relative that uses 56K and use their computer and you end up saying, "If I had to use 56K again, I would quit the web." |
|
I'm still running a 28.8 modem [:(]
On a 120mHz Pentium[>(] When my wife goes back to work, I'm getting a SCREAMING machine and cable modem. In about two years[>Q] |

I had cable modem in San Diego, it was great when I first got it as I right at the main trunk line for my street. When everybody and their brother got it and were using it sometimes it was slower than my 56k modem.
I dumped it when my contract was up. Where I live I can only get dialup, DSL or dish. Dial-up for me. I am not a hacker, cracker, porno-fiend or a warze guy! |

When i was living in the dorms at college i was on a LAN. That was soo cool. i miss it.[:)]

I have the problem now that when I goto work I have a T1 and at home only a cable modem.
Glad you made the jump to 1996. Hehehehe |
|
I know how you feel. We have a T1 @ work too, but between the un-help desk and the techs it's slower than a friggin dial up sometimes!
|
|
I've used cable modems on about six different cable systems. Not a one was faster than a 56K modem to a good provider. The latency was about 40 milliseconds on the best one and about 120 ms on the worst. My 56K modem at work is that good. The capacity on most of them was very nice (at least to their web cache), but when it came to speed, the cable companies aren't so great. I wish they'd get their act together, because while capacity is nice, latency (speeed) is what sets the providers apart. Don't get me started on packet loss...z

cable is generally great....but, wait until the economy swings back strong and fiber gets installed to the home....wooo hoooo!!!!

I just got mine last week...surfing the net is actually fun now, it's amazing! If you don't have it get it!!!

Yep, it definitely rocks. What kind of speeds do you get? I get 1.5Mb down and 128Kb up.

I don't have that little connected symbol thingy to click on anymore. I dod know this, I can click on ARF.COM and BAM I'm there! Not like the old click it and forget it routine I was used to! BTW It'll be great when we start wiring homes for fiber! If you're building a home I suggest wiring it for any forseable use. e.g. Cable/fiber hookup in every room & twice as many outlets then you think you'll need. |

Mosey on over to full-auto.com, check out BOTD, and let us know how you feel about it then.

Just wait until you move.
"Um, honey... we can't by this house..." "WTF? It is priced 20K under its value???" "Yes, but there isn't cable modem service in the area!!!" |
|
Had a cable modem at my apartment for 2.5 years. Used 56k on a laptop on my vacation... I was having serious bandwidth withdrawals!
I have 100Mbit at work (which can get slow sometimes), but the cable at home rarely ever goes slow. Great for online gaming. Love it when my pings in MoH:AA or SH are at like 50-80... :) |
|
got mine about 2 months ago...went from 26.4 kbps to 500 to 1000 kbps!!! it's faster than my son's t-1 lines at school!!!
also just ordered a new p4 dell so i should really fly. earlybirdnj |

What does that cable internet cost you per month?
Adelphia here wants $60/month. That's just too much for me. |
|
It's about $45/mo here, but you have to have at least basic cable, which is like another $20 or so on top of that. I have standard, so I can get a few of the other channels, and I pay about $90/mo for everything. The prices haven't gone down in the couple years I've had it. Figure it would as they build the infrastructure and build a customer base. Maybe when the next hot shit hits, they'll go down. We'll C.

Ok, without me starting a new thread, why does DSL and cable modem cost so much? By that, I mean, what are these companies doing physically to your line that cost them anymore money than a regular phone line (for DSL) or cable for cable modem? What could they be doing that justifies $40 to $60 a month? Seems to me like they're ripping us all off.
I installed my DSL myself, so that didn't cost them or me a thing. |

View Quote There is A LOT of infrastructure that needed to be made for DSL and Cable. Laying fiber optics to connect to the internet, the equipment to encode and decode the traffic on the phone/cable line, stuff like that. That factors into the price. Then there is the standard market pricing system: demand vs supply. There isn't a whole lot of demand, and supply is limited: that leads to higher prices. P= |
|
Bandwith costs - your local provider has to pay to which ever main trunk line they are taped into.
Admin costs - (phones are almost all hardware, internet is a different monster) Customer service costs - Just BS from email issues alone costs a small fortune. |

Here is a good place to check your speed :

I would quit the internet if I had to go back. It's not worth the pain and hassle to get transported back to 1995.
|
|
It runs me about $45 dollars if you just have the High Speed internet, but it's $35 if you have other Cox services. I think it'll be about $70 for the cable/internet. I don't mind paying it now! But I need to find a better cell phone plan. BTW anyone know a good popup killer?

I just got rid of my cable modem. Now I have no internet connection at home. Saving $45 per month by surfing at work after hours. It sure helps to limit the amount of time I blow on the web. My fondness for web surfing is kept in check by my hate for my place of work. I get a lot more done in my free time now.
