i have noticed that, while giving up narcotic pain meds, weed, mushrooms and cocaine were relatively easy, i have been trying to quit smoking menthols since high school.
is is so much worse, or is it my imagination? |

46, been smoking since I was 12. No addiction. Can put it down or pick it up. Not a problem....

For me it has been the worst - though you have a bit more extensive history with addictions than I do...

Giving up alcohol is pretty bad.
I never gave up drinking or smoking cigs totally. |

It's physically and mentally addicting. Think about it, you associate smoking with nearly everything you do once you start doing it regularly.
I had a really hard time stopping and I only smoked for 5-6 years (smoked heavy, though). I had the hardest time accepting the fact that by quitting, I could never enjoy another cigarette after work or on break or while driving my car, etc. After you quit you realize how stupid that sounds but it's the truth. If you want to quit smoking, get a healthy hobby. Once I started riding bikes seriously, I realized that smoking was really screwing with my ability to get faster, so I decided it was either one or the other. Try hiking or running/trail running, rock climbing, etc. All sorts of good shit you can do that won't remind you of smoking. |

I have no personal experience, but a guy I work with got in a bad motorcycle accident a couple of years ago and was in the hospital and physical therapy for months. Said he was first addicted to morphine then percocet. He said quitting smoking after many years was no problem, but the pain meds were hard. Said all the nerves in his body were on fire for a few weeks after dropping the pain meds.

You can break the chemical addiction to nicotine in a week or less. It's the learned behaviours that go along with smoking that are often the hard part.

Quit back in Febuary after smoking for 17 years. It was easier than I thought. I am convinced I just had a habbit of smoking instead of an addiction to nicotine.

Quitting smoking was waaaaay easier than the drugs. I could only quit drugs once. Smoking on the other hand I could quit again and again and again.

I'm having a fucking rough time trying to stop my wife hates it and I feel bad smoking but 80% of the people I work with smoke so Im constantly around it

View Quote There was a study done years ago involving inter-venous heroin users who quit both cigarettes and heroin. They all said that cigarettes was harder. I don't think that really is the nicotine (as a former smoker), as I found the nicotine mostly faded after about 3-4 weeks; however, consider the behavior addition. With smoking, you are talking about 1 minutes of smoking, 20-30 times a day!! Compare that to heroin once or twice, maybe three times a day. HUGE difference. |

I was able to quit drugs and drinking far easier than cigarettes

View Quote i quit here are the tricks I learned. 1. get a new car never smoke in the new car- if yoy always smoke at your apartment move changing environment forces new habits. 2. stop smoking inside- it helps to quit in the winter someplace damn cold 3. e cigs are very helpful 4. stop going to bars 5. that left 2 triggers - boredom or stress at work, and AFTER EATING....Ecigs can get you through these 6. You are only physically adicted the first 3 days of not smoking after day 3 it is all mental. |

The addiction to benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax, Klonopin) is by far the worst of them all....withdrawal can go on for years....

As an IA currently deployed to Afghanistan, I can say the addiction isn't any worse here than at home.

Have not tried heroin or other hard drugs so can not say there. I see plenty of people in drug rehab places that smoke, like half or more.....
As said, smoking is something you do many times a day and certain triggers will be there waiting. I had to 'quit' so many times I forget how many, to finally quit for good. I still have to fight off the urge to smoke. 25 years without them. Not everyone that smokes is really addicted. I hear guys say they kicked smoking easily and then they say 'why can't you do that'? Answer is easy, they had a habit and the other guy has an addiction. I had the addiction. Brain chemistry is different for each person. |

I'd bet a substantial amount of money that all of the "IF YOU CAN'T QUIT NICOTINE YOU ARE A SPINELESS VAGINA" posters would go absolutely ape shit if they were cut off from caffeine. But hey, employer subsidized addictions are cool, right? Plus you look awesome walking around with your $5 venti mocha extra hot skinny latte from starbucks, amiright?

I was a smoker from 17 to the day I quit cold turkey at 25. I am now 53, and to this day I still have dreams at night where I am smoking, and the dreams seem very real. might have to take up puffing on a dream E cig, because dream smoking causes dream cancer.

I quit smoking pot at 35 when my son was born.It was as easy as flipping a light switch off.I was a everyday smoker.
I quit drinking at 50 because the Holy Ghost spoke to me and told me it was not pleasing to God.Once again it was as easy as flicking a light switch off. I also quit cigarettes at 50 and that was hard.I don't think I could have done it without Chantix.3 years later at 53 I still have cravings for a cigarette.I equate my smoking addiction with being a alcoholic--there is no such thing as only having 1 drink or 1 smoke.I know from past experience 1 bummed cigarette =2 bummed=buying a pack=buying a carton. |

Been quit dipping for 10 months. Sometimes I still crave it,would love to have a huge dip.......but I know one dip would lead to endless dipping. The freedom is beyond cool. This was probably the 5th or 6th time I had really tried to quit, the longest I had ever gone before was about 2 months. I used the patch for about a month and a half-I just kept cutting the patches in half about every 10 days. I had gotten down to a tiny piece of patch half the size of a dime. It was the toughest month I have ever gone through. It literally took a month for my brain to resume functioning without nicotine,but it was well worth it.And my car is WAY cleaner!!!! I would never want to be forced to go through that during a SHTF situation. That was one more thing that kept my focus on being free from nicotine.
