1st I'm new to shooting so please be kind
looking to help my nephew get a home defense shotgun
I was wondering what GD believes a good price for a used  Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 would be?

I've looked locally but the prices for used shotguns are close to new ones

thanks in advance

I'd say that's about right for a decent used 870. You might try reading in the shotgun forum under the Armory tab OP. Too many jackasses posting in GD to get any serious answers.

You can get a Maverick 88 for $200 new.  It's a cheap 500 with less features.

HR pardeners are about $200 here

Savage security shotguns are less than $300 typically

Well, with respect to 870s it can very--an Express is much cheaper then a Police Magnum. If you go to the shotgun forum they will explain the differences.

I have an Express. It works great for me. I'd upgrade to the Police magnum if I got the chance.

One thing about pump shotguns is that it is easy to jam them by short stroking. If he is going to rely upon one for defense he should practice with it a lot.

Whatever he gets, tell him birdshot is the best round for a bad guy.

But the racking sound is good enough, but for those 1%ers, unload a couple of birdshot into them.

Believe me, I know what im talking about.  I get all my SD advice from general discussion.

I think Rem 870 18" expresses still go for <$350 new on sale pretty regular. Don't get hung up on buying one loaded with extended tube, "tactical" stocks, or anything, Rem thinks that stuff is worth more than its cost, just get the basic gun, a two shot tube from Wilson is pretty cheap, and a light mount would be a good idea.

Used in good shape for an Express I wouldn't go a dime over $300, a Police I might be willing to offer a little more, I wouldn't for a Wingmaster in the shape I'd consider turning into a HD gun.

Get an 870, it doesn't really matter which one. You will be done with shotguns until you get the disease.

I wouldn't trust my life to a shotgun that cost less than $870

Came to post something like this. ^

I'm pretty happy with my 870P, but I bought it a while ago for much cheaper than they are usually found today.

I do like the used Wingmasters though. I would look for one that doesn't look so hot but is in working condition. These can be found cheap and can make great guns. And, even though it probably won't be a lefty version, who didn't want one of these as a kid?

In before the shotgun haters who'll tell you you're wasting your time.

If you have a local shop check out if they have any on the used rack. Lots of people trade in good stuff at this time of year and there are good deals to be had. Any good name brand pump with a 18 or 20 inch bbl. should fit your wants.

The issue I was having was with the used values
I initially looked locally for a reasonably priced used 870 or moss 500 thinking i could pick up one for $200 ish
but all i could find were $300 and was laughed at when I offered $225
and at $300 I figured I could pick up a brand new one

once i find him one Ill probably give him some of my fed  le132-1b for SD

I thought i posted in the Team forum

I didn't know there was a shotgun forum in the armory
I swear i looked for a shotgun forum 1st....oh well...lol

Some local stores were selling new Express 870's for $300 plus $30 rebate last month.

Look around, and see what you can find.

A month ago I bought a 870 12ga Wingmaster with a 20 inch slug barrel for 360.     Look around and get a really good shotgun.  The build quality on the older Wingmasters is great.
