Holy shit!
Brazilian surfer Carlos Burle may have set the world record for the largest wave ever surfed after riding an estimated 100-foot wave off the coast of Portugal.

They should ban waves that big. Nobody needs to ride waves that big.

The energy and sheer mass in that wave are just amazing - it must have been an unbelievable rush to ride it.

There are so many huge surf breaks that have been "discovered" since I started surfing : Cortes Bank,Hossegor,Ghost Trees,Mavericks,Cyclops,Shipsterns . Nobody ever thought Portugal and France when it came to big waves and it obviously dwarfs Waimea Bay. They just have to get the right conditions and now it's possible to chase giants. Not for me. I've been out in 18' and its scary,I admit it. This or that hideous freak at Cyclops? Hell no |

Full story is his friend Maya almost drowns surfing that shit, so he jumps in, saves her life, swims her to shore, does CPR, packs her in an ambulance, and ONLY THEN DOES HE GO CATCH THE 100fter!
That is uber-man points... except for the sending your friend to the hospital after CPR and going "uh... later chica... gotta catch some tasty waves!" |

It's no different than calling in a dustoff for a fellow soldier wounded during combat and then having to get right back to work kicking the enemy's collective ass. |

Portugal. Who'd have thunk it. Certainly isn't Bell's Beach Australia.

What is going on in that area to generate such big waves? View Quote It's a combination of things. Weather patterns, thousands of miles for the wave to build, and a sea bottom profile optimized for that particular size of wave. The Cortez Bank off San Diego gets waves coming across the Pacific. In some spots the bank is about 30 ft deep, and that interacts with big waves to create even bigger, breaking waves. But if the swells are smaller they won't interact with the bottom profile and they'll just serenely pass by. Once they hit the right size you can get 70 ft breaking monsters. |

"He's not coming back...."
ETA - as a occasional surfer this almost made me poop my pants! It's not the 100' drop down the wave's face that the most dangerous, it's still really dangerous but these big wave guys are limited in speed by board design and as you can see the whitewater is going to catch up with you. Problem is it catches up with you in much more shallow water than you started in. Once that washing machine catches up your going for a ride. You just pray that it releases you before you run out of air, play cheese grater with the bottom, discover a pair or rocks your body fits nicely between, fold you in half backwards, ect ect.... A 100' wave breaks with the force of around 10 tons per sq/yard. If you went over the falls or were in the impact zone of the crest it would feel like a garbage truck just landed on you... Ballz, he has them! |

We sat and watched the surfers at Jaws a few years ago with 40 footers...unreal
