Which one is better for shooting small game such as hogs, deer, yots with a 55-64gr 223 bullet.

Have been using Fusions the past few years but damn those things are hard to find and much more expensive than reloading. I currently reload v-max, spire points and FMJ's. Should i add hollow points to the mix or do the soft points preform better in animals than hollow?

different applications different results.

thin skinned HP's put stuff down quick. but ruin meat with fragmentation. Soft point has better retention/expansion but less trauma.

pick the bullet for the application.

Deer and hogs are not small or medium game. But a 53 gr barnes will kill deer.

Hollow points are for varmints (prairie dogs and other pests).  Soft points for anything bigger.  In 223, the Winchester 64gr soft point is a very good choice for deer.  Hollow points are an inappropriate bullet for deer as they get insufficient penetration to guarantee a humane kill.

As for coyotes, a lot of people use HPs on them to good effect, others use SPs to good effect.  So choose whatever you like or has been shown to work.

HP's for yotes...  you're not eating the meat and they die fkn instantly

I use soft points on deer with good sucess.

Hollow points make me nervous on them since I am afraid I may hit a bone and it will lose it's energy before getting to the vitals.

70 gr spire points drop deer where they stand.

Hollow points are great for pests, soft point if you want to bring it home as you don't need to worry as much about fragments.

Coyotes  it does not matter what bullet you use

Hogs it does not matter what bullet you use if you shoot them in the ear

Deer use a Barnes TTSX

This. Mostly, some modern designs blur the rules.

The smallest rifle I hunt deer with is a .30-06 (must be >/= .23 cal. in VA for deer), but I would try the 62 gr. Remington Core-Lokt Bonded bullets in .223.  (These are soft-points.)

hp - barnes TSX, dont use a varmint hollow point that explodes.

I've had soft points still fragment

Awesome bullets....Nosler makes their old reliable Partitions in .223 as well.....60gr. I think Federal even has these available in a factory loading as well  Also a bit less costly then the Barnes.

Teddy R. and Pete Capstick said sollids for any medium or big game in order to break bone AND penetrate to vital organs.

I still have a few Fusions left, but Black Hills sells a 60 or 62 grain SP.  I'm not sure what bullet they're using, but the POI is about the same as the Fusion for me.

How about, anything bigger than 22 caliber for deer?

yotes - always HP or ballistic tip type ammo

stuff I might choose to eat, soft points or monolithic hollow points like barnes.

Or a .223 placed by a decent shooter.

sadly, there are some places that do not allow the use of a .223 on deer.

I can see why in areas where people are taking 300 yard shots as the norm.

Around here you are lucky if you can even see the deer past 60 yards, the woods are thick and the crop fields are small.

I don't think the point has as much to do with the bullet performance as the actual bullet construction does. Sierra makes very accurate hollow point boattails(Gameking) that are designed for animals in the deer size range.

I'm trying 62 grain fusions this year. I haven't killed a deer with any of my AR's, but I am this year.

with both hollow point and standard soft point bullets... the important factor is velocity.

Im getting 2400 FPS with my 77 hp nolser loads out of my 12.5" barrel. This will perform well on deer (especially our sitka blacktails). now, i 50 grain hp bullet in a .22-250 at 3600 FPS will explode with little penetration. good for varmints, bad for body shots on deer (I have used similar loads on deer taking only head shots, and it drops them DRT).

I have seen 150 grn SP bullets out of a 7MM mag explode at close range on a deer without leaving an exit. too fast and too thin of a jacket.

I always recommend a barnes bullet or a bonded bullet when hunting with a high velocity caliber (over 3000 fps).

Me personally, I like lower velocity and a heavier bullet. less internal damage to deal with, but better penetration.

Relying on gel tests can be tricky, as you have to evaluate the trustworthiness of the lab and all, but I would say if soft or hollow points were the best that could be, there would probably not be Vmaxes, ballistic tips, and the like.  The advantage might be terminal performance, it might be precision.

But referring to your previous question, some state doesn't allow .22 cal deer hunting, so theyobvioulsy cannot be killed with an AR.
