The surefire ones look great but can't justify spending $80+ on something I know I'll lose within a year.

I dont have one, but i think the cold steel ones are usually recommended on the cheaper end.

I searched there website for "pen" and the only thing that came up was the Pocket Shark pen, which is incredibly tacky. Due to the frequency of use it will get, I would prefer a "clicker" style. |

I have a 5.11 tactical pen. I picked it up from LA Police Gear for 40 bucks. I travel regularly and have no issues with airport security as it does not look nearly as menacing as some of the other pens out there. It does have a sharp pointy side, but I cap that and reverse it to expose the ink side when traveling. I place it alongside my other pens and have no problems. It has a flat cap that screws on and allows you to place your thumb over the top for leverage, unlike some of the others that have "DNA" collectors. I wouldn't want to put my thumb on that! Anyway, I found it to be a happy medium when compared with the other on the market based on price and appearance.

I use cheapo Uniball Vision Exact.
The plastic is durable enough that they don't break in your pocket, ink writes in all temperatures (used mine down to -40), and they write on a surprising number of surfaces. And if you're prone to losing stuff, they come in boxes of 50 |
|
Zebra 402. They write very well for the cost (about $5 for two) and the have an aluminum body which won't shatter or splinter if I have to shove it in somebody's eye or other part. |
|
Is this what you had in mind? I got mine free with an order and it seems ok. $20 if you buy them.

It's not very discrete with the S&W marking and it's pretty sizable but it's stout. |

This one has held up well for me. The only downside is every time you drop it, without the cap covering the righting end, on the concrete floor in a housing unit it lands on the ball and puts a flat spot on it so it writes like highway lines (- - - - - - -). Also the replacement cartridges are like $6 and I have yet to run one out of ink, due to dropping and breaking them before I use them up. |

Gerber
Got two of these and I love them. I use a lot of the Rite in the Rain stuff so it a great pen/ Heavy as hell. CSF |

I have, and have had many of the CRKT Tao Pens, you cab find then for less then 40 on Web. Right now i have a tan with polished rings style.

Zebra F701 or Parker stainless Jotter. I also have a few stainless Space Pens, but I just don't like them as much. The Zebra is better made, for about 1/10 the price.

Didn't you watch The Borne Identity? Bourne uses a Bic pen to help defeat the guy with a boot knife.
Your welcome. |

I'd like to find one that's a clicky and slim. Seems most of them are too big to fit in a standard uniforn pocket stash and the overly pointed end would be a bit excessive.

I took a Bic pen and replaced the ink with mercury.
When forced to use it, I write "prepare to die" on the adversary, and sit back and wait for their inevitible demise. |

"Tactical" pens? Seriously? Pens are tactical now?
And I suppose this is yet another must have for "EDC" right? Hell I guess it makes sense. If you're already dressed in tactical pants and a tactical shirt, and tactical bacteria combatting underwear, and tactical boots for all your dynamic ops and you're running a .45 semi auto with an extended mag release for tactical reloads, and you EDC a .38 snub nose BUG in your tactical concealment ankle holster I mean why not add a tactical pen. I mean if you have room after you primary and back up flashlight (remember two is one and one is none), your 45 reloads, your .38 reloads, your tactical tanto fighting knife, and your tactically cased phone you might as well add tactical pen to your kit. Sorry guys. Not trying to be a dick. This place just makes me laugh some times. |

As a deep thinker, I have replaced all my tactical gear with strategic kit.
So then, who can recommend a good strategic pen? |

Zebra stainless.

What the hell is a tactical pen?
I have a box of 1000 pens with my company info on them, cost less than one of the metal ones, you can still get stabby with them too. |
