Yup, almost a direct quote.

Just finished a call up where the complainant actually said: "We need some type of government organization to help stop this!  Somebody has to do something!"

Apparently Grandma got scammed.  Yup, she "won" 3million dollars in Nevada and had to pay the taxes on it.........by sending a money gram to some guy in Jamaica.  Yeah, sounds legit.

And his answer is more government.

I said quietly "Nah. No more government"

"Well, what should people do then" He quipped.

I said "maybe more personal accountability."

He basically had the "mind blown" look on his face.

Uhhhhhhh, these people are fucking up our country.

Walmart has a big sign at the money order counter that warns people about scams like this.

The Post Office does not.

I'd say the private sector is already ahead of the curve on this one.

"They should have a law..."

...where if you actually think that sending money to Jamaica to claim a 3 million dollar lottery, you should be jailed forever for being an idiot.

Or, is this "government organization" supposed to stop scammers in countries other than the U.S. from scamming folks by email?

Either way, sounds like a perfectly rational idea.

My mom works for a bank and has two or three customers come in a DAY to transfer money out of the country like that. She always warns them it's a scam. Some yell at her and file complaints (which promptly make it to the shredder).

Same situation, I used to work at a bank and every once in a while we'd get some dumb fuckers coming in wondering why their accounts were $2,000 in the negative when they were ASSURED that some nice Nigerian gentleman was supposed to deposit millions of dollars into their accounts.  Repeat customers, even, which means they either fell for more than one scam or were strung along by the same guy(s).  *facepalm*

Walmart cares about it's customer's because it can't just raise taxes and support a failing business model, nor can it raise the price of stamps and further push itself down the downward spiral... postal service is run by idiots... the one good thing about businessmen is that they know how to budget.. they can't simply raise taxes and support a failed business model either

They do need to do something about these russian and nigerian scammer's though! oh yeah put the spammer's in there also...

I had a junk email account on yahoo.. got some pic from some hot russian chick.. I knew it was a scam but the chick was hot and I wanted more pics.. I created a few more junk yahoo emails and proceeded to TROLL the scammer.. they have cut & paste letters for the first ones then once they believe you are buying their bullshit they start sending more personal ones.. then they start asking for money... searched the info on it and found some idiot had sent thousands to this dude.. and there is a russian dating scam catcher website... people get desperate I guess...

OLD PEOPLE are really lonely.. I used to deliver groceries to some old folks homes when I was 16... so they probably fall victim in part due to that...

You can't fix stupid. My uncle who's on disability keeps sending psychics 30-40.00 a month and has been for YEARS cause they keep telling him "you will win the lottery soon" heck they even sent him a lucky rock to match the one's in his head. The truly sad part is he's always tapped out by the second week of the month but he just won't listen to reason.

The victim is in this country.
Not much local LE can do about it, but maybe that's why the person in question thinks that something DOES need to be done at some level of gov't

I don't see why we should tell some person thats been bilked out of tens of thousands that they're dumb and to blame for being defrauded.

There are some pretty slick guys running scams out there and yeah, they do seem to target the more trusting older members of our society.

International borders doesn't stop the authorities from going after bad guys. Maybe there does need to be a focus on some of these defrauders so the more vulnerable members of our society aren't so at-risk from these sleazy types

If you're so fucking stupid to think you send a money gram to Jamaica to pay taxes on a prize from a contest in Nevada that you didn't enter then NO law can help you.

After all is said and done it was in fact a tax.....a "stupid tax"

That's a more obvious example that most people catch as being a fraud, but as I just posted, there are some slick guys out there

I'm suspecting that some of you who are so quick to blame the victim have never met any of the elderly victims of these scams, and maybe have no older relatives of your own, for you to be so quick to blame the victims....

edit: some of those 'stupid taxes" as you call them can run to tens of thousands of dollars
