I know most of you are sick of the NY political scene.
This Golisano is 100% pro gun. I line up with this candidate on most issues. I think Pataki is a liar and a traitor. McCall is a puppet- Not to bright either. Socialist Worker Party? I don't think so. The Marijauna reformers? Single issue, boring. This is real change. I'm not throwing away my vote. I'm reconsidering my Republican enrollment. www.golisano.com NY voters please a least consider Golisano. Wants to make NY a "Shall Issue" State I went to hear him speak at a Candidtes night. He "blew away" his competitors reps. |

Tom Golisano is a liar and a criminal. Judge Keegan, a Democrat, ruled this week that he made illegal campaign contributions in this election cycle vastly exceeding campaign limits. How's that for integrity and campaign finance reform?
He has made repeated slanderous remarks concerning State government abusing authority to harass him knowing full well that various privacy laws governing State interaction with citizens prevent the State from defending against these accusations. What does this mean? He makes claims that can not legally be refuted even though he knows them to be false, because we are bound to maintaining his right to privacy. COWARD! He is like a feather blowing in the wind. Medical marijuana can get me a few votes? OK, I'm for that. Buy some votes by promising free tuition at SUNY in a program that will lead to rampant grade inflation and strip funds from primary and secondary education? Well, it SOUNDS good in campaign commercials! Fiscal conservative who talks about having to raise taxes. Makes claims in his ads that EVERY major newspaper in the State (and there aren't many pro-Republican papers in this State) have labeled false and misleading. The man is pathetic, he is a liar, he has no honor, he is a hypocrite. Tom Golisano IS the ultimate special interest who thinks the Governor's manion is his to buy. You of course are free to vote for whom you want, but it is a wasted vote. BTW, Golisano says he favors the right to own "reasonable firearms." Anybody want to define that for me? |
|
Hiram, help us out here. I've already thought I made my mind made up to vote for Golisano as well.
Heres the problem, and I posted my reasons in the Politics forum as well. McCall is just another Klinton Democrat. Golisano - As you stated in your post, all understood But an even bigger problem - as you describe Golisano as "The man is pathetic, he is a liar, he has no honor, he is a hypocrite" That the same way I feel about Pataki, aside from being a wolf in sheeps clothing and sellout. So, Golisano is a wasted vote, and if I vote for Pataki, I'll be supporting the same asshole who screwed us. McCall, well you couldnt pay me enough. How many moving days till I get out of this shithole state again? (uh-oh, feel a rant coming on!!!!) [soapbox] I'll tell ya what, run on over to NY State Republican Committee office for me and tell the motherf&ckers I want hand written apology. I want an apology for screwing me over after 12 years of being a hard-core Republican defending 'our' views in college to my fellow 'liberal-minded' Political Science classmates at a 10 to 1 ratio. I want an apology from all those assholes who told me to support our illustrious Governor against Cuomo. I blindly followed, worked the polls and plastered his sign all over the neighborhood, and look where we are. Another 4 years of 'oh good, the Republican won' And what have 'we' gotten in return, second highest taxed state in the nation, and a Republican gun control advocate. F the Republican Party, I'm done with 'em. |

Golisano got a B from the NRA. So he'll get my vote. If it gets worse under Pataki should he win, I'll leave too if I can.
|

It's your back yard, but if Pataki gets re-upped and Golisano can take second that means Hillary gets THIRD PLACE ON THE BALLOT in 2004 if she runs for Prez or if she tries for the Senate again in 2006.

Better the devil that hasn't fucked you yet, then the one that has had his way with you quite a number of tiems already. |

I love this place and I love you guys, but sometimes I just don't see what you're thinking.
Yes, the state's gun control laws piss me off. However, are you going to be a one issue voter? I understand some people are but that is naive, no matter what the issue is. You have to look at the totality of the situation. First, NY has cut taxes more in the past eight years than every other state in the country combined! What does that tell you? We were way overtaxed under the Cuomo regime. More than $100 BILLION in tax cuts. Second, education and environmental protection funding is at an all time high. We all want our kids given the best opportunities and to have a safe place to live. Crime is down ahead of the national average. Job growth in NYS is ahead of the national average despite what Golisano might say. Federal labor statistics show more than 630,000 new jobs since 1995. Also, NY is home to some of the largest corporate investments in America. Sematech, the billion IBM chip plant in Fishkill, a 100 million distribution hub in Amsterdam for K-mart... These are just some of the recent examples. In fact, Site Selection magazine rated NY top in the Northeast and third best in the nation in terms of a business climate that encourages growth and investment. Golisano says he is against sweetheart deals and special interest funding... hey Tom, give the $600,000 back to the State that you got for Paychex if that is an inappropriate use of taxpayers money in your mind. Hey Tom, define REASONABLE right to own guns. Who defines REASONABLE? The NRA is useless to me these days, could give a damn what they rate him. Tom is a liar so I don't believe him. How can he say he is 100% progun so long as the gun is REASONABLE? Can I say that again? REASONABLE! |
|
Golisano is still a better choice than Pataki, FUCK Pataki I don't care that he is a republican, that don't grant an auto vote from me anymore. I'll give Golisano a chance to prove himself because we already know that Pataki IS a liar and a hypocrite. HiramRanger, thanks for the information but it doesn't change my vote and it doesn't look like other NY'ers are changing either. McCall is not even figured into this race for me so no comment on him.

P!ss on Elmer Pataki. A vote for this antigun hack is a wasted vote, thank you very much. |

Three years ago, Eyewitness News went undercover to expose how you could legally buy a small arsenal of weapons at guns shows in New York without any identification. Governor George Pataki, New York (February, 1999): "It's one that we will look into. I am clearly not comfortable that that can happen." After our investigation, the governor made background checks on the sale of all gun show firearms mandatory. Now, some are calling for him to do the same for private gun sales. [/quote} Nope, no more pataki. |

Call BS all you want on the tax issue, its a fact. Income tax rates have decreased for every tax bracket in the State. The "marriage penalty" has been reduced and is nearly eliminated. The Estate and Gift taxes in NY have been repealed. Tax credits for everything from energy efficient appliances to historic barn restoration to alternative fuel vehicles to oil/petroleum storage tank replacement are a few of the 63 taxes the Governor has cut. The STAR program has resulted in lower property taxes, sadly localities have gotten greedy and increased tax rates to offset that cost, and in some cases have increased them beyond the original level figuring that they could mask the true rate of increase behind the STAR cuts.
You do not want to debate taxes with me, I have worked as a public relations official on state tax issues for the past four years. I know the facts, you are discussing perceptions. Tax revenue has increased because tax cuts stimulated economic growth and job creation at such a rate that we raised more by taking less as a percentage of income. Maybe on average people paid more but they were making a hell of a lot more. Also, our tax policies resulted in a surge in corporate tax collections as businesses expanded operations and spent more locally. As for crime, a slight uptick in one year does not negate the fact that over the past eight years violent crime has dropped dramatically in this state. Criminals go to jail and the Governor eliminated parole for violent felons and he pushed for and won the death penalty. Regarding firearms, I agree that NY's laws suck. Reality is they are going to happen no matter who is in office. If you don't believe that, you don't know how government works. You may understand how it should be in an ideal world, but reality is vastly different. By the way, while I think its great that Golisano has reached out to gun owners, it is illegal for Golisano's campaign to give away raffle tickets for a valuable prize - i.e. Ithaca shotgun. That is considered an attempt to buy votes. Not very ethical in my mind. Campaign pins and bumper stickers are one thing, valuable firearms are another. What if the Governor was out offering raffle tickets for a Rolex... I'm guessing a lot of folks would be up in arms. But, since its a gun, well that's alright. Its your vote, if you want to vote for Golisano that's your business and your business alone. I simply want to make sure you are aware of the facts and not sound bites handed you by his $60 million PR machine. |
|
Quoted: You do not want to debate taxes with me, I have worked as a public relations official on state tax issues for the past four years. I know the facts, you are discussing perceptions. View Quote And this says it all. I can tell you in 98 I paid 271k in state and local taxes, 99 I paid 298k in state and local taxes 2000 it was up to 365k in state and local taxes and finally 2001 came in just shy of 400K. Perception is, taxes just keep going up, and you want ot know who the buck stops with? The govenor. Golisano gets his shot, pataki had his and he, in my estimation, blew it, and badly. I understand politics Hiram, really I do. I understand something else, if we could get *one* guy in there who did not want to make it his lifes work, he could pretty much do as he pleased. Yes, I am sure you are saying to yourself, "but thats just not how it works", I say, yes, yes it is. He gets in there and promises the democratic swine that infest our capitals what ever they want to hear to get his stuff passed, then he silently fades away at the end of his term, laws overturned, taxes slashed, and unfortunately a few people who work for the government having to find real jobs. Government should and ought to be filled up with first termers, none of them really knowing how it works, all of them taking 3 1/2 years before they really know their way to the bathrooms. Highly inefficent, nothing gets done, life is good. |
|
Just to add one more thing to my generalized rant, every single new law that is passed does not increase our rights, nope, in fact every single time those guys get togehter and finally agree on something it has fursther narrowed our rights, some are taken completely away.
Where is the politician that has a campaign based on doing away with ten laws for every new one they think we need? Shit, I would mortgage my property, sell my businesses and clear out the safes to fund that campaign. Who wouldn't? |
|
Saying that government should be filled with one termers who don't know what they are doing is like saying that business should be filled with a bunch of people with no conceot of accounting, inventory control, customer service, marketing or profit maximization.
You say your tax liability increased every year, but you don't give your taxable income nor relate what percentage of your income resulted in stated liability. In other words you are warping statistics to suit your purposes... then again Golisano is famous for that. Let's give you a hypothetical. Golisano is elected. Assembly remains in Silver's hands and the Senate in Bruno's. Neither side will trust him or work with him and he is too hard line to compromise... which is what government is, the art of compromise to meet as many needs as possible. So he sends them a budget they won't back, think Pataki's first budget. They load it with member items. Golisano says he won't pass it. So now there is no money for state operations, valued social programs, education assistance, funding for law enforcement and other emergency service... everything grinds to a halt. He still refuses to compromise and the legislature gets pissed and loads the budget bills back up and decide to ram it down his throat and over ride his veto. Now we have a budget that is worse than the original compromise proposal and they have neutered the office of the Governor and found they can run roughshod. Government is not a business, the Governor is not a corporate CEO who can rule by fiat. I'm sorry sir, you don't understand in the least. |

In my county
-Miller Brewery-gone -Nestles-gone -Armstong, lay offs -Huhtamaki (formerly Sealright) layoffs; rumored soon to be gone. Hell the Republicans think the little upstate counties are gimmees so it's the counties with democratic controlled cities that get the smoochs and pork barrel. We are in an economic downward spiral-I don't see how things are going to get worse under Golisano. A friend of mine from college was in town last spring and we both noticed that everyone we knew who had an education or skilled trades experience that would allow them to leave the area and find work elsewhere (except for a few with strong family ties to the area) are gone. My county has the very young, the very old and people in between on welfare or working for minimum wage in service jobs. And did Pataki veto the 2000 state Assault Weapon Ban (I honestly don't know the answer to this)? And how much does that failure to pass the budget on time EVERY DAMN YEAR! cost us-Albany really needs a through house cleaning in the next election to shake these guys up. |
|
Actually failure to pass a budget on time usually results in the State saving money. Here is why. When the budget does not pass on time the State operates on emergency appropriations which freeze spending at the rate of the previous year, no inflation indexing. BTW, the Governor can hardly be blaimed for late budgets. This year there was a good chance there was going to be an on-time budget but the Assembly held it up to deny Pataki that victory. The fact is, a budget can not be passed over the legislature. The Governor can not pass a budget without the legislature, the legislature CAN pass a budget without the Governor. Put the blame for late budgets where it belongs.

|
And don't forget state borrowing: Under Pataki, state borrowing has increased at a higher rate than it did under Coumo. New York state has the highest debt of any state in the nation.
Besides, Pataki sold gun-owners down the river with his "reasonable" gun control. It's time to send him down the river... |
|
Pataki definitly sold out.
But don't forget the Libertarian candidate, Scott Jeffery. |
|
Nice first post... rhymes with goal...
The State has its highest credit rating in a generation, thanks to the Governor's policies. The credit rating agencies said the only reason NY did not sink into depression post September 11 was the the steps taken in years prior to pay down debt, establish fiscal reserves and creating a pro-business climate that diversified the State's economy and allowed it to weather the storm. Their observation, not mine. Much of the debt currently on the books is refinancing to take out previous debt at significantly lower interest rates to save the taxpayers money. The only serious bone of contention you have with the Governor is gun control. If you are a single issue voter, I can respect that even if I disagree. However, to try to misrepresent tax policy, job creation or any other part of his record is a non-starter. As for economic development you might wish to read this site http://www.nylovesbiz.com/default.asp That is, if you want to be knowledgeable rather than anecdotal. |

Take fair warning my friend and pass the info along, he wont even get over 55%. How many gun owners in NY is Pataki going to lose as supporters in this and future elections?I for one won't forget. Recent gun club meeting was held - 30 people in attendance at the club - ALL but 5 said they will not be voting for Pataki as a RESULT OF THE CRIME BILL. Pataki blew it and we'll never trust him again. I guess this ruins my chances of getting a $8/hr job at the KMART plant huh? [;)] |

HK, in a three way race to exceed 45% is considered huge. You hit 50% in a competitive three way and its a landslide. 55%, if he gets 55% in a state that is 5-3 Democrat and 11-1 in the City it is the blowout of modern political history.
There are a lot more jobs, go to the website I referenced above. Empire Zones aplenty, Sematech moving into Albany, a new steel mill in Upstate, the Carousel expansion in Syracuse, the Centers of Excellence at the local universities which foster technology development as a cooperative venture between academia, the private sector and government. I can go on all night, but it will make little difference to you. The Governor supported a bill that NONE of us agree with. The fact is it has no impact on us since the provisions match the federal law and the federal AWB is not going anywhere. It sunsets two months before the general election of 2004. It will be reauthorized, mark my words ladies and gentlemen. I wish you'd vote for Pataki but I'm just happy you're voting, even if not for my guy. |

Hielo, you seem like a nice guy too. I don't have a problem with you or your political views... that's America. I also respect some of the arguments you make. I do however think you misrepresent me when you use a disparaging remark like "government worker" in a snide way. A few things you should know about me. I am a conservative Republican in an extreme way. I like my guns, I hate taxes, I want government out of people's lives, I hate abuse of authority, cheer for the little guy (in fact when I come across a little guy getting stomped on I do what I can from within the system to help him... a few members of this board can attest to that) and would love to see the size of state government cut in half. You say state worker as if you can paint with broad strokes. You have civil servants, many of whom are competent, but all are biding their time until they can retire. And you have appointees who contrary to what you think are not their because they gave tons of money. I make shit, work 60 hour weeks, am on call 24/7 and have no job security as a political appointee. My salary would double if I went to the private sector. For some of us its not about the money, its about giving back to this country. I went $40,000 in debt for an MPA from the Maxwell School. I know that is chump change to a high roller like you. My first job with the State was 70 hours a week at $22,000 a year WITH a Master's degree from the worlds top graduate program for my discipline. Don't come to me and characterize all public servants in a negative light, many deserve the criticism you level, many others do not. If we lose this election, if "my dog don't hunt," I'll move on, work less and make more. I probably won't have the stress I have now and I'd have more time to enjoy my hobbies, friends and family. Yes, I have a vested interest in this race and its not my job per se, its the hope of being in a position to continue to make a difference in somebody's life. Sorry if you can't see that. Since you seem to be in a position to do so, why don't you bankroll me and make me the AR15.com lobbyist. Pay me enough to live on, give me the resources to do the job and I'll fight every single gun law that comes down the pipe. If you truly are a single issue voter and if you have the resources you claim, put your money where your mouth is and let's do something rather than bitch. |

Come on Ger, Golisano might take upstate by a few percentage points, McCall only leads in the City by a few percentage points and the Governor is kicking ass in the Suburbs of NYC which is where voter turnout and about 40% of the electorate is. I don't think it is going to be the 20% blowout that Marist is now indicating, but McCall is currently worried about coming in third behind Golisano.
If Golisano wins I may be looking to leave the State. |

Sorry Hiram, as much as I know you are true beleiver, I have to put my money with the tried and trued governemnt bribers.
There is no such thing as good government, I truley beleive with every fiber of my being, that the best government is the governemnt that governs least. I truley don't want an efficent government and the thought of schools putting out people with MPA's sickens my stomach, but to each their own Hiram. Pataki may win this time, but those of us who have had enough will make sure it does not happen next go around. |

Sorry I can't resist, so what you are telling me is you are in a room full of people with a net worth of $100 million or more and they have decided to the one to vote for a fellow mega-millionaire who thinks that the Governor's mansion is his to buy as is everything else? This is a toy for Golisano, an ego booster. What do you do with that kind of money? You feed your ego. You buy $60 million of ad time so you can cause a stir and have everybody saying your name. I'm not surprised he found a warm and receptive audience among you and your friends. You are the special interest he is catering to. :) But what do I know, I'm just one of those lazy and dumb state workers who couldn't hack a regular 40 hour work week... what would I do with an extra 20 hours of time a week? |

LOL Hielo, your own words earlier were that you would grind government to a halt with one termers. I may be a masochist to work for the people of this state for peanuts, but I'm not an idiot. If Golisano gets elected nothing happens in this state for four years, and we are at a crossroads where this state will either flourish or wither away. Inaction will lead to the latter and Golisano will find himself unable to achieve anything after his slash and burn candidacy.
Anyway gentleman, I need to get going. Three days until the elections! |

View Quote Be that as it may (your work that is), Golisano has used the tool available to him to do what he can. I wonder (and maybe you can tell me), how much is the combined ads, lets say, all the signage on roadways that we the taxpayers pay for, promoting the govenor, all the tv time featuring George, all the documents that are printed at our expense, but are in thanks to the Govenor, etc. How much does all this cost, 90 million? I don't know oif a single government projec tthat is statewide that can come in under 10 million,a nd there are what? A hundred or a hundred and a half of these "Remember me, the govenor, who did all these wonderful things for you and fixed all these roads you are driving on right now". I for one respect a man who is willing to put his money on the line, instead of stealing other peoples money to do it with. I myself do very little ego feeding with my money Hiram. I do manage it with an eye that it is really not mine, that it is my wife and children's. Of course, I know that I am mistaken there, it is really the states to do with as it sees fit, but I live in hope (oh, and I live with a number of good accountants and lawyers Ha. Since my wife stayed in Manhattan last night I have no one to tell this to right now, so here goes. My daughter goes to a fancy prep school (yes, really expensive, but she is doing calculus in 4th grade, what are they doing for math in public school at fourth grade?) Every friday is pizza day, where the little loves get to have some good, italian pizza, bought from a real pizza shop in town, as opposed to eating what their 5 4 star chefs produce for them dailey. Of course they must manage their own money at this school, and pizza day costs 3 dollars (the horrors, 2 slices of pie, a piece of fruit and a drink). My daughter forgot her 3 dollars and was given the pizza, fruit and juice anyway. She told me about this early this morning and I got on the phone and got the headmistress out of bed and gave her a good chewing over for this. How is my daughter supposed to learn about the seriousness of money, if it is not treated seriously? Can she expect a handout, just because her belly is rumbling? For some reason it really pissed me off. Why wasn't she made to wash her fellow school chums dishes for her meal? Why wasn't she given a loan agreement with interest charged? Seem silly to you Hiram? I am raising my children to be on the top of the pile, not part of the pile. That might be my ego booster Hiram, but thanks for listening, I still am pissed off at it. |

Hielo, I like you, I really do. We have far more in common than you think. I am a product of private schools, Catholic education to be specific. I think its great that you are excericisng choice to get your daughter the best education you can afford. I just take it a step further and say everybody should have the choice to pull their kids out of failing educational environments, be they rich or poor.
I despise government. I'm also smart enough to realize that they only way to limit it, keep it in check, reform it... is to work from within. By its very nature it is resistant/immune to massive change. It is a step by step process in which you exact change when opportunity arises. You pick your battles so as to maximize your resources. I'm on record as saying cut the state workforce way back. I think we should get government out of people's lives as much as possible. But you have to agree, government is a necessary evil in order to maintain freedom. Otherwise we live in a state of nature in which freedom will be denied by your fellow man based upon strength. I'm serious, you want to change the system? You get a few of your friends on board... say the 50 from the other night, and everyone kicjs in $20,000 which is a pittance to you. I'll take that $1 million and keep 10% as my compensation and use the remaining $900,000 to wage all out war on the system. I'll fight every gun law, push for lower taxes, seek to reduce the workforce, give parents more choice in educating their kids... you name the issue, if it is conservative I'll advocate it for you. If you are unwilling to do that I guess I'll continue what I'm doing and try to change the system from within. |

I simply for the life of me don't understand why you guys who constantly complain about the Republican Party don't just use the simple expedient of joining the party, attending the meetings, voting your consciences, and moving the Republican Party of New York over to the right on the RKBA?
I mean we all hear the tales of derring-do that will occur when 'they come for our guns', but wouldn't taking over the Republican Party be significantly easier and less messy than the TEOTWAWKI scenario? If you want to see a Republican Party in action, just come to Texas, where every state-wide elected official is a Republican, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future! And how do they view the RKBA? Do you even have to ask? [:D] Eric The(YeeeHaawww!)Hun[>]:)] |

I've got to ask...
Hielo talks about his taxes rising from a mere 270K per year to around 400k a year and blames that on Pataki. He specifically mentions property taxes and as Hiram mentions, fails to associate those tax figures with income. Hielo, how much has your income risen as a percentage in the past 8 years? Don't tell me an exact figure, just give us a percentage. Then figure out how much your tax burden in NY has risen in the same time period as a percentage. Of course you may want to factor in assetts that you may have converted from non-taxable to taxable status during that time. Also, if you increased your real estate properties in the state during that period you became subject to more state and municipal property taxes. A lot of folks like to blame all the bad things that happen on the chief of the executive branch, forgetting that there is also a legislature that actually exerts most of the legislative and regulatory power. For instance...Clinton takes the credit for all the economic development of the 1990's, forgetting that a republican dominated congress pretty much handed everything to him on a silver platter. You are doing the same thing to Pataki in reverse. You are blaming him for a lot of the crap that others, over whom he rightly has NO CONTROL, have done. Most property taxes for instance are enacted at a local level. New York is worse than most thanks to a plurality of county and local sales and property taxes. The state property tax was enacted by....ready for this....Democrats in the LEGISLATURE. Did Pataki sign it? I don't know, but it's highly likely that failing to sign it would either have resulted in a major policy loss somewhere else for Pataki, or a veto overide vote. Pataki has worked to reduce that tax burden, but as Hiram pointed out, many of the counties and local municipalities offset those reducations by upping their own property taxes, taxes that Pataki has no control over. Making this worse is the fact that the majority of voters, even those who are diligent in state and federal office voting, fail to pay any attention to local elections and politics, so the local political hacks have a fairly free hand to operate as they choose. They only need to watch themselves during the elections that coincide with major federal level elections. Most folks couldn't name a single town selectperson, and forget about county legislators, they are just too remote seeming. Yet they are the ones who impact your property taxes the most. Big property owners and those who own property in multiple towns and counties need to pay attention to activities in ALL of them or get nickled and dimed to death by a bunch of politicians whose names they don't even know. But hell, it's just plain easier to blame it all on a single guy. By the way, if Golisano pulls the spoiler thing like Perot did to Dole in 96, and loses Pataki the election, you can COUNT on things getting exponentially worse under Carl Marx, I mean McCall. |
