I have to take a certain medicine every day.  There is only one manufacturer of it.  My monthly cost WAS $75 and now it is... get this... $900 per month!!!!  The manufacturer says that they are having trouble getting certain components for their drug so the increase reflects their increased cost to manufacturer it.  This has been my luck all of my life.

It has nothing to do with offsetting the cost of research.  The cost was $75.  That has been so for over 3 years.  To charge $900 for the same drug is pure greed.

Buy the components and synthesize it yourself, or stop taking the medicine.

pharmacuetical (SP) manufacturers have a huge cost to recover. For all the meds that make it to market and earn them money, how many didnt?
How many millions of dollars were spent on the pill that makes liberals glow blue, only to have FDA approval denied?

they recoup those losses somehow.

We wont even get into the extra $2 per dose you pay so they can pay the lawsuits when thalidomide goes bad, or it turns out in 50 years the Viagra causes bone weakness, or whatever.

Its too late everyone now considers you FSA because its not something they have to deal with.

Forget that you have been paying for it for 3 years or that the price increase was +825$ a month...

Those costs were "recouped" years ago.  A $75 drug (they set the price) didn't go up to $900 to recoup costs.

Likely you were paying co-insurace at one point.  Now, you are paying the fully loaded cost.

I am unaware of any med that has increased from $75 to $900.  Provide the drug name, and I can get the pricing history back to launch most likely.

For some reason, I'm finding it hard to give a fuck.  Oh it's the 800% increase for a product people need.  How many of those same drugs have sent people into a psychotic rage, thus meaning the drugs should be pulled?

Most drug companies have programs for people who cannot afford needed medication.  A 1200% increase is probably not something they did by choice, since most people cannot afford to pay that, even for needed medication.  I pay over $6000 a year in medication and assorted medical costs, and while its frustrating its not greed that drives up the costs, its pure economics.

This is relevant to my interests.

It was $75 retail? Now $900?

Talk to your doctor and see if he can suggest something cheaper. Second, see if you can get the manufacturer to help foot the bill.. some do that.

My main drug still has active patents so it is very expensive. I get razzed by my insurance every year or so.

Guess where I will be getting my prescriptions filled from now on?

Of course they couldn't possibly have a supply problem with any of the components they use.

I know I was getting reduced size prescriptions for some of my meds earlier this year.  Hell, even my dog's meds went through a supply a little supply issue a couple months ago.

In your own words:
The manufacturer says that they are having trouble getting certain components for their drug so the increase reflects their increased cost to manufacturer it

So.....they're greedy for not taking a loss?  A pretty massive loss, it would seem, given the price increase?

Post or PM me the drug name.  I'll get you the answer.  Pricing isn't set by pharmacies.  Pricing starts at the manufacturer.  It can be influenced by payers and pharmacies, but not at the rate you're describing.

Yes.  Economist by training.  I've worked in the industry for over a decade now.  I've seen exactly 1 instance of a company raising prices by 400%.  That went poorly.  So, the idea of going from $75 to $900 is interesting to me.  Now, it appears it is $103.  This story is amazing.

What's the med?

OP may not be totally out of line....recently (last 2-3 years) a lot of manufacturers have dropped off making generic meds. Usually they are injectables, but they are affecting some oral meds. They used to be seen as break-evens/loss-leaders for large medical groups to buy from their product line, but companies have been dropping them due to lower Medicaid reimbursements. So once generic meds are now single sourced, price goes up and some instances cost more than a comparable brand name med.

Ditto.

I know of drugs that have reduced cost to the patient for their initial prescriptions, then goes to full price...or the insurance decides to drop coverage for the drug and the patient has to pay full price...

Or the FDA decides that a drug that has been in use for 200 years (as an isolated drug...if you count using the natural basis for it...then 3500 years!...) isn't 'safe' and won't allow sale of the generic...and allows sale of the only brand name drug that's done the safety studies....colchicine/Colchrys...

Would you be dead if the company didn't exist and didn't make the drug you take?

I can't see a drug increasing in price by that much after being only $75 for 30 day supply. Maybe one rare ingredient is actually harder to get and costs that much. It can happen.

If you can't profit from business activities, there is no reason to be in business. If pfizer can't make a profit making drugs, then they disappear, and everyone else suffers. Nobody is making life saving drugs just for fun. They have to eat too.

So the greed now falls to the pharmacy you were dealing with and not the drug company, right?

Considering the amount pharm companies put into research that must be recouped from the few drugs that sucessfully make it to market, there's a reason drugs have extensive patents.

You're in luck.  That's my specialty.  This is the first I've heard of that price increase.  Typically, in HIV, price increases are similar to CPI adjustment.  Anything larger than a CPI increase results in large rebates to government purchasers.
