For the first time in my life, I was contacted about a job opening. I wasn't looking. So to answer your question, I guess when I saw the offer they made me.

Yes. Indeed. The whole experience so far has been pretty crazy. (Been interviewing for 6 weeks)

Luckily I posses something highly valued in my industry... Young age.

Earlier this year the company I was running work for was losing the contract to do a certain companies compressor stations.   Well the new company coming in tried to recruit me with a very nice offer to basically keep doing my job and just switch companies.  Didn't feel right so I finished the last station and came to Pakistan for a spell.

If your boss is a dick then bugout.   I learned a few years ago something that has stuck with me.   Take care of your employees and they will take care of you.   I had to lay off about 25 guys before finishing out and I would almost bet 95% would walk through fire for me since I did treat them so well.   Some people get in a position of power and it gets insane.

Good on you. Sometimes it's hard to leave your comfort zone even when it's shitty there. I did the same thing seven years ago. Left a telephone sales job I was getting burned out on and completely changed careers, becoming an EMT. Always something different, never boring and more money. Actually just got promoted to Field Ops Supervisor back in April. Sometimes change is a good thing!

Yep.  Having a dick boss demotivates employees and reduces output.  If you were a good boss then the people you laid off usually understand and don't take out their rage on you.

Good for you! I quit a civil service
Career after 12 years. Moved to th private sector doing essentially the same thing. I basically have 1000% better odds of promoting, they are paying for me to return to school, and will pay half of my kids college. I work less hours and make the same. I have the opportunity to work as much over time as possible. I was nervous at first but my stress levels have disappeared and I'm looking forward to the future again.

I'd be very leery of counter-offers since I'm guessing there would be no actual written contract of employment.

Would you really trust a boss who was a jerk, again?

Now, if your current employer were to fire this boss and promote you that might be sufficient.

I had a good bit of CAM knowledge when I applied at several different machine ships, as I was completing my undergrad degree, yet I never even got an interview.

I'm confused. You quit your current job 10 minutes ago, gave two weeks notice, and start this coming monday at the new job?

If they "wanted"/"needed" him to stay that badly, then they would have made him an offer at his annual review to increase his salary or given him a performance based raise already. There's always bad blood too after you come in and say you're leaving for a competitor. Things might be rosy for a few weeks, but it will inevitably come up again and you will find yourself wading through lots of crap.
