Since I lost my job and doubt I'll get another at almost 57 years old and single, I'm thinking I'll just call myself retired.
I've been wanting a dog for a long time but when I was working I just couldn't see locking/leaving a dog at home for nine hours - too cruel....

I went to the humane center today - just to see.
Lordy, I came away crying.
I want them all!
I walked down those cement isles with all of those dogs behind the bars looking at me with their big ol eyes.

I didn't see what I was really looking for, and now I wonder if I can walk down those isles again....

I guess I'm just a softy.....

I know, CSB

Our local HS posts needs on their front sign.  I stop by 3-4 times a year with supplies.  I pet the dogs and cats and whatever else they have there.

I adopted one male cat that was in that little cage for over a year.  He's a damn good cat and a mouse killer to boot.

Agree, I'm a total softy when it comes to those places. People tend to cause their own problems, especially when they are older, not so much with dogs. Every dog I have ever gotten from a place like that has been fantastic. It's quite hard to be objective when you want them all.

They'll all kill a mouse.  Just some of 'em aren't much good at catching 'em.

I rescued Frank from the Columbia, MO Humane Society. 7 years ago.  They guestimated his age around 10-11 when I got him.  I had him for 6 years, until I had to put him down in November of 2011.  I miss him so much, and it was the hardest thing in life to hit me.  I can't imagine the pain I'm going to feel when my mom/dad die.

Go back.  There will be new dogs there or maybe one you saw before will catch your eye and win your heart.  Then you can start living vicariously through your dog.

I know, I know.
I was just taken aback by all the animals there and wondered why they were all there.

Honestly, I always had my heart set on a purebred Labrador - but now I'm not so sure.
I do know that I want a very young pup.

When I was there today there was a cute mixed breed Retriever/Lab/Queensland Heeler only three months old - I was really tempted...
If he is still there Monday I'll have a hard decision!

No one wants older cats. This one was 10yrs old when I got her. I'm sure she was nearing needle day. Now she is 16 yrs old and protects my PMags from the undead.

You wouldn't be the first person who had his heart set on one specific kind of dog, only to be happy later that he got a whole other kind of dog.

Let us know what you decide.

I've had a lot of animals now.

Never chose a single one. They all picked me.

When the right one comes along... they'll know.

Yup when I lost Achilles I swore I'd wait a year before getting another dog, and when I did I planned on a Boston because I wasn't sure I could handle another Pug right away. Two weeks later I came across General Jack, a Smooth Coat Border Collie/Black Lab mix. I was done for the second I saw him. Resistance was futile.

The "dog pound" in Boise have 3 types of dogs... Pit Bull mix, Black dogs and Little dogs.  I was shocked to see the little dogs carry an "adoption fee" as high as $300.    What ever happened to free dogs from the pound?

Well that pound includes a building, utilities, maintenance, insurance, salaries, medical care for the animals, food... Some animals you have to give away and you're lucky if you don't have to put the down. Others are in demand and people will pay or hem. That's ow bills are paid.

$250 for my little guy. Beyond 6 months it drops to $200. His adoption fee included all shots, neutering, micro chipping.
