I also received some gift cards I would like to spend on new books. Does anyone have any recommendations? I do not want a book that is going to put me to sleep so the more entertaining the better, but I really am looking for something with substance. I took a macro economics class in college and was able to do well but I'm a little rusty so something that is comprehensive would be appreciated as well. Text book or primary source/traditional works? Can't go wrong with Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. |

Something written by a Marxist or Socialist on money matters, would give a pretty good idea of how we got here.

Its a great starting point, if for no other reason than the ideas contained within are essentially the foundation upon which all mainstream modern economic thought is based. Some times a good text book can be a good idea as a companion though, both because of the way the book is written (18th century English) and the fact that some of the concepts have been tweeked, refined, or built upon since then. Also they will generally have things laid out for a beginning student and may have simple examples of the concepts with the math associated with them neatly set out. |

Basic Economics by Dr. Thomas Sowell.
Excellent book, not dry or boring at all. All his books are excellent actually, but you should start with that one.

Good general interest book about economics:
Good general interest book about the behavioral side of economics, these sorts of subjects and analysis is what I really love about economics and it often really puts liberals' panties in a twist. For example, having a pool is far more likely to kill a family member than having a gun in the house: |
