I have never had any in the US that remotely resemble a good French one. Though I'm sure somebody makes them fine here. If in Europe, try one from Paul's bakery, it's a chain originally from France but they are all over. I have had them from their store even in Prague and they are pretty much the same. I would never have thought of it but somebody I know living in London asked if I could bring her some out of all the possible foods available in France. The pistachio ones (green) are especially good. Over there they are the size of a small hamburger. In London they have Paul's, but I never saw the large sized macaroons, just the tiny ones and they were pretty expensive.
