I'm looking for a .22 to teach my young kids to shoot and hunt. I would like a bolt action single shot...no automatic for first rifle training. The wrinkle is I would like a tube magazine rather than a drop out box magazine. I don't want to be buying new mags everytime one of the little rats drops one out in the woods squirrel hunting.

Any one run across anything like this? Any better suggestions?

I don't want a .22 mag...those always led me to take shots at turkeys and deer when I was a kid wandering around the woods...not that I'm turning mine loose like I was. It's a different day and all that.

How about a lever action? I love my little Henry.

Though they have a magazine...CZ makes an awesome very underrated rifle.

Eta: you could rig up some Velcro strips for mag insurance.

I was looking at a small Henry last night. Seemed a little heavier than necessary, but i am considering that. It accomplishes my main objectives which are deliberate reload action before blasting off multiple shots and no mags to loose.

I bought my Grandson a single shot TC Hotshot rifle; smaller scale version of the Encore rifle in .22LR. Its a great little rifle and he loves it.

I would look hard at the CZ 452 Scout. It has a detachable magazine, but I used a single-shot "mag" that was simply a loading ramp. You could tape it into the rifle so it could not be released.

Remington 580 or 582. The 580 was a single shot bolt action(no magazine whatsoever) and the 582 was a tube feed. Other than that, they're the same gun as the 581 I had, which is the version with a 5 or 10 round detachable. Ten shot groups the size of dimes were easy at 60 yards.If you can find one and prices in your area are similar to mine, they runn about $200 or so.

ETA-there's a very nice 580 on gunbroker right now, no current bids. $235, Wisconsin seller.

Seconds on the Henry...I bought one for my daughter on her eleventh birthday. I shoot it more than she does but it is a sweet little shooter and fits the bill for a novice. I would highly recommend one.

I would just take them to a local gun store that has a decent selection of used rifles and let them help pick out a good old tube fed .22 like a Marlin 39A lever.
Bring a small light to inspect the bore/bolt face/extractor with, look for a shiney bore and clean bolt face with little pitting, rust, worn surfaces ect. Ask to have them run a patch down the bore with Hoppies followed by a dry patch to clean any you like but can't see the bore condition due to fouling. Most used rifles at gun stores are put on the racks without cleaning and some with nice bores can be found.

A single shot rifle has no magazine, and that's a good place to start kids. They can lose a tube magazine as easily as a box magazine, too.

Buy an old and venerable Remington and be done with it.

The next question is about the size of the kids. If they are young and adult size rifle is too heavy and too long to shoot correctly. If you buy a Cricket, Chipmunk, or similar rifle, they will grow out of the gun in a year or so. I also like the Anschutz Achiever for a kid because the shimmed butt plate lets them grow into the gun until they are full grown and the price will be similar to that for a Remington.

I want to get another Savage MkII, with a threaded barrel and a single shot adapter (you could set screw one in place).

The Marlin 795 is a nice little rifle for the price (around $200, I think) and it can be upgraded with wooden stock, Garand-type sights and a scope once the shooter gets a little more advanced (It's also a good rifle for Appleseed matches).

I'd happily recommend a CZ 455 scout. Someone posted a link to the Romanian M1969 trainer. I love mine! I cleaned up the stock (it looked like it was dunked in a varnish barrel) but that sucker is simple, reliable and shoots straight! I've had mine for years and I think I paid maybe $70 for it. But at about $120 it's still a great deal!
