For me, this ruins the holliday's tradition. I am very dissapointed and I'm not looking forward to it.
To give them a little bit of credit, it is at a cool place....The Rock Island Arsenal, but still....... I can't be the only person here who isn't having a traditional thanksgiving. Before I sound completely negative on here, I do understand that there are many brave soldiers out there who aren't getting the day off and I thank them for their sacrifice. |

My dad used to take us to the mess hall when I was a kid. Loved it!
My inlaws ate out a lot of Thanksgivings apparently. We have had Thanksgiving out a couple of times with them at nice restaurants. When you are doing all the cooking and clean up it doesn't seem like such a bad idea to go to a nice restaurant. It takes up the entire day plus prep time the day before cooking and then doing all the dishes afterwards.

For several years before I married, my traditional Thanksgiving (and Christmas) was Starbucks in the morning and Carl's Jr. for lunch before heading in to work. God bless those two fine franchises for being open for a single man.
This is the first year I am celebrating Thanksgiving with any of my family in more than a decade. It's going to be weird.
My family usually travels to Europe for Thanksgiving and I'm usually off working somewhere or really just don't want to go because I travel all over the world for work. |
My parents decided to go to Israel for Thanksgiving.
I'll be staying here and spending Thanksgiving at a friend's house. Not sure what we're having. He may fry a turkey or give us prime rib. |

Yeah Thanksgiving and Christmas were tough times when I was single, had to prepare your own food I got stuck driving somewhere on Thanksgiving once, I think to Florida, I forget why. Anyway it was a long drive living off gas station food Probably should have planned ahead a little better... |

Mom's fmaily: After years of packing in to a house with an ever-growing number of people, with no elbow room, and utter refusal to have it at a location with more space, I have come to resent the holiday dinners. I would much rather it be direct family: my sister and her crew, the wife and I, and the parental units.
It's always a big bitch-fest about who is bringing that and this and this person just can't handle the stress of having to make the turkey. Dad's family: Since my grandma died, the family from out of state has stopped coming for holidays, so it is a small dinner of the group mentioned above, then my annoying fucking cousin, his vegetarian wife who counts the minutes until she can go to the gym to work off dinner (or by my assumption go purge) and my worthless FSA, freeloading dead-beat uncle. My dad pays for the entire meal for everyone, spends a week preparing, etc. because he feels like since grandma is gone, he has to bear the burden. It's bullshit. I see why people take the easy route. |
That would be awesome. You could order whatever you want. Thanksgiving food sucks.
Mom has been taking me and my brothers out for Thanksgiving for years.
For me being with my family who I see once or twice a year is enough. |
I'm going out with one side, and then doing the rest of the day with the other at home.
this is the first time we're going out to eat tomorrow also, but it's a really nice upscale place - i don't want my mommy slaving away all day cooking, then the cleaning.

Quoted: That would be awesome. You could order whatever you want. Thanksgiving food sucks. Most places have a Thanksgiving meal buffet with ham, turkey, some kind of beef, fish etc. Really it's probably a better meal than we could ever put on but my father in law I think is looking forward to coming over to the house so no biggie. We cheat and cater the beef and just cook the ham and turkey at home along with the side dishes. We also buy the pies. My wife never really baked as a kid and I don't have time to be baking pies. |

In 1995, on T'giving day, my family members were on the road, for our mother's funeral the day after T'giving. We stopped at an old fashioned truck stop, which had a truly amazing Thanksgiving dinner. It was great! Pity we couldn't take leftovers. That night we were all staying at a hotel, and wound up going to a Pizza Hut for the evening meal. Pizza on T'giving! I was surprised how many people were there to eat that night, the place was full.

Count your blessings, sometimes I'd rather do that than stay in the kitchen with the in laws.
Offer to cook Thanksgiving dinner for them, it's not too late and it's easy if you know anything about cooking.
Anyone can follow a good recipe ! ETA: Before my family got so large, I cooked TGD for all my friends and family. This will be the first time not cooking TGD in 15 years (gotta work). |
I am working 7am-1130 pm to not have to deal with family drama. My wife is bringing me dinner.
We did it once, and it was weird. After that, if I wasn't haze grey and underway, we had a traditional (at home) meal.

My wife, kids & myself live in Michigan. Both my wife & my family live in Missouri. Since my mom died this summer I'm not very excited about driving to MO. It would probably turn into a bitchfest with my brothers anyway. The wife's family is laden with FSA members so I'll pass on that as well. We will stay home this year & BBQ a beef tenderloin stuffed with crab & shrimp. (real crab meat) I kicked around the idea of going to a nice restaurant but decided against. Restaurants usually frown upon its customers unbuttoning their pants after dinner.

My wife and I went to a restaurant for Thanksgiving two years ago. Our kitchen was being renovated and we couldn't cook... it was a nice change.
Once back in the late 70s maybe 1980 I spent Thanksgiving night at a Queen concert
from those of us that are on call for all the stupid resturants that are open on thanksgiving...
please eat at home |
This year we are having baked pheasant instead of turkey. My wife ,son & I went on a cool euro style hunt and brought thirty home. My son called my wife`s little 20 gauge Weatherby a "prius" and now it`s a family thing to laugh about. Good times will be had around the table.
THat being said,,,a few years ago before our parents went into a home we decided to eat out for turkey day. It was a blessing with older folks. |
I haven't had a Thanksgiving dinner with family for 8 years.I used to bitch about it,now I miss it.
This time of year really sucks being divorced, family in CA and triple the normal cost airfares. Another month and it's all over...Until next year. |
We did that for years after grandparents died off and I was in HS/college.
It is a huge relief. I could actually spend time with my family. No rushing around. No cleanup bullshit. The food was always absolutely awesome. Don't scoff at the idea. It was awkward until our first bite, then we said f-it. Besides who wants dry turkey leftovers for 5 days? Now that I am married and with a baby, we host 20+ people at our house and enjoy a full dinner that we make. Going out to eat def has its place though, and we had some pretty awesome meals that way. Dad was always a class act and left a good 50%+ tip too. |
The kids and I are having pizza and baby back ribs. Since it's just me and three preschoolers, I let them choose the menu.
The wife and I haven't decided yet. Some years we go out, some years we cook in and some years we've get the "Thanksgiving in a box" from the local Safeway. It's all good.
I'm eating ham sandwiches at work when I get a break from handling calls. All the restaurants will be closed, so I'll have to swing by the station to eat.

That would be awesome. You could order whatever you want. Thanksgiving food sucks. Agreed. Everyone thinks I'm weird because I can't stand most of the traditional Thanksgiving food. I would much rather go out. The best part... no eating nothing but Thanksgiving left overs for a week. This year the family is going to my Aunt and Uncles for dinner. It's always drama over there and my Aunt can't cook for shit. I'm just staying home by myself lol Maybe today I'll go by some stuff to make Tacos tomorrow |
For the past few years we've been buying the precooked turkey meals. Pretty good and you can buy from different vendors for a different taste.
Eating out for Thanksgiving dinner has been a tradition for us for the past 4 years and I'm sure we will continue it. Me, my wife & kids, and our local extended families all go out then go to one of our homes afterwards to hang out, munch on snacks & desserts, watch movies, etc. It is a nice relaxing way for us all to get together without any of us having to do the work of cooking & cleaning.
ETA: we always go to a place that serves a traditional Thankgiving dinner. |
Being divorced, I get my kids for thanksgiving every other year.
So on years like this, I go to a local Arfcommer's isle of misfits thanksgiving dinner here locally. TXL |
I have no problem with going out to eat for TG. My wife gets apeshit anxious this time of year trying to wrangle the yams, asparagus, wild rice casserole, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, cookies and turkey. I'd gladly pay to get her to chill and have a nice meal out with family.

Crap, came here to post a Christmas story reference. |

Going out is awesome... no one feels like they can't enjoy the day until all the prep is done, or the cooking is done, or the clean up is done...
You can drink wine/beer and watch football or the parade or porno... whatever you want. And if you like your family, even better spend it with them, and if not, friends, or playing Black Ops 2... with total strangers online. I haven't had a home cooked thanksgiving in years, and i have not been happier... i do feel bad for my kids sometimes, but then i realize that they won't be burdened by traditions that didn't make me happy. They can do what they want. The Turkey day is their oyster... so to speak. |
The holiday is about giving thanks, and about family. Not where or what you eat.

We are also going out.
One side of the family is going to have the In Laws and all their kids there and live 12 hours away. We all said "PASS!!" on being in a crowded assed house with no less than 15 kids there. |

It is a PITA, but I actually enjoy cooking a turkey with all the trimmings... the smell thoughout the house... smells like... tradition! WE visit my wife's family for Thanksgiving and they have the meal prepared by a restaurant and pick it up Thursday morning. A little bit of cheating, but they still finish it at home and it feels pretty traditional. At Christmas, I do the whole Turkey thing at my house, and we invite family friends over to share it with us. |

After my grandmother passed away, my dad didnt want to be in the house, so we went to Ellis Island and then to a restaurant in NYC. My parents go back and forth on what to do for holidays. We went to D.C one year for Tgiving, that was fun too.
