I have a Toshiba thrive that I love. I am looking for one that I can get for my mom for Christmas. There is one at wal-mart now for $99.99

Coby 8"

and here are a few from amazon that I found. I would like for it to have a usb port, so she can hook up either a external drive or keyboard/mouse. This will be taking the place of a cheap netbook that she uses.

7" google Andorid

PIPO Smart S1

10" google Android (heavy 3lbs)

Like I said, not looking to spend a ton. Just want something she can use to mostly surf the web.

I'm not a techie, so I don't know about all the nuances and features of all the alternatives. I just know I got my female a Kindle Fire fro her birthday and it works very well and she likes it a lot. It's big enough to see, but handy, and does all of the stuff you'd want: internet browsing, etc. It is also a good book reader.

The cheapest I would go would be $200 for a Nexus 7.  The really cheap tablets will make you want to throw the POS out the window.

I would spend the extra money and get the kindle fire if your mother is not technology inclined. Amazon has done a good job of making a hassle free experience with easy to access vetted apps and digital entertainment content.

My BIL bought some cheap POS for my sister ,it's fucking painful to use it's so fucking slow you do want to smash it on the floor.

Nexus 7 or the like ,$200.00 for your mom to make her happy is nothing.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0" will run you about $200 at Wal-mart, if your local one has them in stock

Ditto, you might think your are saving money, but there is a reason Coby is only sold at Walmart and pharmacies. Even if the specs look comparible, the screen and touch interface is where the cheao ones skimp. Us a cheap tablet for 20the minutes, then go pick up one of the major brands and see the difference for yourself.

I have a Nexus 7, and going from hardware and quality of the touchscreen, it is hands down the best tablet for the money. Period.

Cheapest I'd go would be the base model (non-HD) Kindle Fire.  If you are a little more technically inclined, you can do a Refurb nook and push CM7 to it, but that's not non-techie territory.

Then the base model (non-'tablet') Nook Color roots quite nicely, and can sometimes be found for around $100.
