I finally have my CNC Mini Mill and Lathe working right

Now I'm looking for some easy projects to help me build my skills.

Preferably something along the likes of making
tools that I can use as my skills increase.

Any links to sites would be appreciated

A mini-cannon like some folks here bought for Christmas might be fun.

Go to bbs.homeshopmachinist.net and look/ask around for lots of ideas.

Make more tools, duh. Small hammers, fly cutters, boring tools...

Got an indicator base? You could make a home brew version of an indicol.

Machining and metalworking resources TONS of info and it has a projects section
CNC cookbook-projects
KMG grinder clone plans real simple as far as machine work and a good belt grinder like this is worth it's weight in gold,trust me.

when i went threw machinist school our first couple projects were a ball peen hammer and a c clamp. my tests for work were to make a pump shaft(think crank shaft) and a coupling hub, also made some internal lefthanded double lead acme threads for the finale, lil tricky. making simple stuff like front steering parts for the truck or quad, shift knobs, small engine case splitters. just make sure when you start a project, draw it out, right down your measurements, then proceed. when i was starting out i was pretty pleased that i didnt pay for the metal, id get in a hurry, miss my mark, now we have scrap metal!

How about a fancy muzzle break?

I made a lighted one and it turned out pretty cool. It needs to have the bulbs cleaned pretty often, but other than that its pretty useless.

I used to have pictures to a project my old shop boss did when he was a green horn. It started out as a metal cube. Then 3 or slots were milled into it, rotate the cube, fill milled gaps with premade spacers, mill the same slots, repeat one more time. now 3 sides are milled. The next 3 are milled the same way but the direction of the slots were mirrored if my memory is correct. once it was all done it was a cube shaped 3d knot that was milled out of the parent cube.

I'll try and find pics again, but someone stole the one my boss made off his desk a few years back

I had to shorten a steering column today, and made a new 3/4 bar for in -between the u-joints.

I had fun.

For your lathe draw up a sample part that includes some stepped diameters, Od threads, ID threads and different finishes. Put a spherical face on one end and on a similar part put a flat face. Some OD/ID grooves for at least thread relief and different radii and chamfers at the corners. This should develope your ability to do most things especially if you remember to allow stock on the parting face for clean up on a second op. Make sure you dimension all the features and tolerance them on your drawing so you can practice holding size and staying in tolerance.

For the mill, make some V-Blocks, a sine bar, and some 1-2-3 blocks. Those would be things that if made right will last you a lifetime unless, of course, something unfortunately expensive takes place that you weren't counting on

Use some aluminum to make a set of your practice parts, then use some mild steel, Stainless, and "Dammitite" for your practice in changing speeds and feeds and depth of cut/tool loading issues. Make sure there are at least some tapped holes in your prints since tapping can be a pain in the ass all of it's own universe.
