I read an article years ago about the football.  In the article it said that the service member carrying the football had a specially tailored uniform which housed a pistol pocket for concealment.

I shook hands with him twice while armed (in uniform). He shakes hand with all kinds of LEOs and miltiary whenever he is traveling. I have no doubt the SS wtahces everyone
very closely.

Id think not. Afterall, its not like he has the actual button right? He (or she) is responsible for carrying the codes so the president can approve the use of nukes and start the sequance so someone else can mash the button, flip the switch, etc. The guy with the football just carries it around for the president.

Military, I once had a Lt Cmdr that stated he carried the football for a time. Never said anything else about it, just that it was an assignment.  Not sure of the vlidity of his claims, but there it is...

This is true.  Field grade officers (O-4 ^) are assigned to accompany the President with the briefcase/satchel/"football" 24/7.
