MagicJack worked for me, but it's downside is that your computer has to be on. I switch to nettalk which plugs into the modem. First year is $70, after that it'll be $30 a year

My Magic Jack works great...voicemail to my e-mail, so far so good even in a very old computer..
Good enough to dump Time Warner soon. I read the reviews too but took a $40 chance... $19.95 a year or $39 a month got my attention. |

I use an ooma hub. No computer required, just broadband internet. No monthly fees except for international calls and some premium services. The call quality has been excellent for me. It pays for itself in 4-6 months. I've been on mine for about 3 years.

Vonage just jacked my rates up from $9.95 with 200 minutes to $11.99 with 300 minutes. Might have to cancel soon, I just needed a line as a holder for the # I've had for 20 years and an occasional fax.

I have a friend who uses it. He calls me from Houston, there is some delay and buffering. If you just keep that in mind, like you are talking on a radio, it works okay.

Standalone box, number porting option in case you want to keep your number when switching to them. It needs any router...doesn't have to be wireless. Plug it into a port on the router, and then plug your phone into it...or do like I did, and wire the phone jack to your entire house wiring. Now all my jacks are wired for the NetTalk. |

I went with a Cisco 2811 ISR, a couple 7962 phones, and a SIP trunk. Initial cost was...high.
 But now, I average around $10/mo for it, depending on usage. (No one in their right mind does this at home, but I'm a geek, so it was inevitable). |

I don't have a real need for a cell phone, and I sure as hell don't want to pay their ripoff rates. I only make and receive calls a couple of times a week. I did get a Tracfone with a 1000 mins which will more than cover me for a year in the case of an emergency (only cost about $114 for the whole year). NetTalk and/or MagicJack are perfect for me. I get the benefit of a home phone for a very small fraction of the price. |

just remember that every VoIP service runs over the internet, so you voice quality will depend on the quality of your internet connection.
Allot of internet providers are telecom companies and if you dump the land line for VoIP they will now you are running voip and if you dump their traditional land line service they are losing money. So we have ways of making your VoIP calls sound crappy. Plus allot of DSL providers require you to carry their copper service if you want internet access. Mine does I have DSL and I have to have phone service, and I work for the phone company in this area. |

I have magic talk for when my wife runs over her minutes on her phone or when I plan on making long phone calls. I have no issues with it and do not plan on changing. Yes the computer has to be on, but it's a laptop that is always on anyway.

I set my phone up so that the most common numbers I dial are on speed-dial. I add the area code and it's easy to use. I'm used to having to put in the area code, I don't think about it anymore. |

Since you guys aren't on the same switch anymore as in your phone number belongs to NetTalk, the local exchange can't simply route the call with the area code left off. |

But no, we pay for phone + unlimited long distance. If I can get the wife to get a Google Voice # then the long distance goes away. |

here's a question. is there a voip service out there that will work with a fax or dial-out modem? i sometimes need to send faxes or dial up to a customer's site via modem. everything i've seen says this only works over a landline. if there's a way, i'd love to ditch the home phone since this is pretty much the only reason i even still have one.

here is the only bad experiences I have had
once after about 6 months the phone just quit working.. I called and they have to re-set it from the office.. that has only happened once then when I went on vacation, I usually turn off a power strip that runs my PC while I'm gone. well, I didn't think that the VOIP modem was hooked to that strip and my phone didn't work while I was gone. no big deal, people who really know me had my cell number anyway but it has to have electricity to work where a real landline with a basic old style phone will still work many times if your house power is out |

If T-Mobile is an option, they have some phones that can connect to their network over WiFi. You get free unlimited minutes and no roaming charges from anywhere in the world when connected that way, as long as you maintain a voice plan of at least $39 a month IIRC.
Works great for me.
