Id like to do the same thing but what about security cant people use the wireless network signal to.....whatever ??? Right now my wife has her work desktop on cart and moves it back into the office at night when the baby goes to sleep and has to move a network cable with it -primarilly cause I'm to lazy to run a cat5 outlet out there but wireless would be the way to go then she could use it just about anywhere in the house.

I wired my house (EVERY room) for a LAN. They all interconnect to one face in a cubboard in my office, which connects to my router, which connects to my cable modem.

One word "AirSnort"
AirSnort is a wireless LAN (WLAN) tool which recovers encryption keys. AirSnort operates by passively monitoring transmissions, computing the encryption key when enough packets have been gathered. 802.11b, using the Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP), is crippled with numerous security flaws. Most damning of these is the weakness described in " Weaknesses in the Key Scheduling Algorithm of RC4 " by Scott Fluhrer, Itsik Mantin and Adi Shamir. Adam Stubblefield was the first to implement this attack, but he has not made his software public. AirSnort, along with WEPCrack, which was released about the same time as AirSnort, are the first publicly available implementaions of this attack. AirSnort requires approximately 5-10 million encrypted packets to be gathered. Once enough packets have been gathered, AirSnort can guess the encryption password in under a second. In about five minutes the program can crack WEP - if you're even using it. Wardriving is the latest hacker activity. www.TechExtreme.com had a pretty good artical on how to get started with recommended equipment and software. My home network is a 100 mb ethernet lan or about ten times faster than 802.11's best no over head figures. Figure about 4-6 Mb from an 11 Mb 802.11 signal. A fifty foot ethernet cable from the office room to the hot tub would cost about $8. The security it provides is priceless. At 40 bit WEP with a very busy AccessPoint it takes about 3 Hrs to get a good enough sample to crack.
At 128 bit with same settings it takes roughly 3-4 weeks to get a usable sample. I know because I have done it.(I'm a Net Admin in charge of security) The Lucent Orinoco cards have a update that randomizes the Identifier so it makes cracking much harder. So the best thing to do is run a VPN inside the WEP. If they bust the WEP who cares they still need to get past the VPN. And Wardriving it a hoot. Not that I have done it but im told it is..... |
