seriously?
WTF? they just came out with 4, (which blows major donkey balls) and now it wants me to upgrade to 5???? did I miss something? |
They're trying to commit to a faster/more-consistent development/release cycle. I upgraded, and I don't see anything new, other than the "app tabs" or whatever. I'll still use the bookmarks toolbar for that functionality.
ETA: Firefix 5 is still using 250+ MB of RAM to handle the 4 ARF tabs I currently have open. |
Four had a memory leak and ghost instances for me. Had to reboot every few days or internet use came to near standstill. Glad to be rid of it. Haven't had enough time yet to tell if 5 has the same problem.

Run mozbackup BEFORE you upgrade, in case something shits the bed.
Thank me later. |

Chrome, the more I use it, the more it becomes painfully obvious that it's a complete piece of shit. Sometimes you can't even log into certain sites with it... what the fuck? Firefox, no problems. |

did I miss something? yes, the slashdot article. http://news.slashdot.org/story/11/06/22/172229/No-Additional-Firefox-4-Security-Updates CWmike writes "Unnoticed in the Tuesday release of Firefox 5 was Mozilla's decision to retire Firefox 4, shipped just three months ago. Mozilla spelled out vulnerabilities it had patched in that edition and in 2010's Firefox 3.6, but it made no mention of any bugs fixed in Firefox 4 on Tuesday, because Firefox 4 has reached what Mozilla calls EOL, for 'end of life,' for patches. Although the move may have caught users by surprise, the decision to stop supporting Firefox 4 has been discussed within Mozilla for weeks. In a mozilla.dev.planning mailing list thread, Christian Legnitto, the Firefox release manager, put it most succinctly on May 25: 'Firefox 5 will be the security update for Firefox 4.' Problem is, users are being prompted to upgrade now but are hesitant because the new rapid release of updates means many add-ons are not compatible. And without security updates in between, many could be left exposed with unpatched browsers." |

Firefox 4 was/is terrible, which pushed me into using Chrome. Chrome is much faster, and seems no more problematic than Firefox for me.

It's a third party tool you download to back up your profile. And FF doesn't "force" an upgrade. You were given a prompt with the chioce to cancel. |

Nope, I clicked on the firefox icon and it said it was installing an upgrade, same as if it was going from 4.x to 4.x.1 but instead went to 5. |
Hell I still using a (currently patched up to date) version of FF 3, if it works, dont break it.
I just went to see what version of FF I had and it did the update to 5.
I'd rather go back to 3.6.
I may end up going back to Opera if 5 isn't any better. I only switched for the built in spell check. |
I don't understand FF4. They basically took all the tool bars and hid them for a more sleek look.
FireFox can suck a dick. FireFox 4 is the reason I have a hard drive with the boot manager file missing.

I'll give 5 a week. If it shits the bed like 4 then its back to 3.6 for me. 4 is an abomination.

Quoted: this sucks i want 3.6 back Agreed. Every time Mozilla releases a new version of Firefox they break some of the popular add-ons, forcing users into an endless cycle of checking for updates to their add-ons. It's getting old. |
I'm happy with 3.6.
Though I seem to be using 1.9 gigs of memory... |

FF5 does not support google toolbar. I'm looking at a search bar with a Google G in it right now. |

With you there. I have at least a dozen tabs open with FF 3.6.18 in Ubuntu and it is using about 200 MB RAM. Whoop-de-doo. What is the "correct" amount of RAM for a browser to use, anyway? I couldn't give less damn if FF4 used twice or even three times the RAM of FF 3.6.x. Unless I'm running multiple virtual machines, I never come close to filling my 4 GB RAM. I didn't buy it to sit there empty, so the "how much RAM does it use" prick-waving contest among browsers is not interesting. |

Quoted: this sucks i want 3.6 back I am damn glad I was too lazy to upgrade immediately and got to hear all of arfcom's bitching about 4 first. I haven't gone past 3.6 and won't until I let you guys test out 5 first. |
I liked 4 and I'm liking 5, I hate tool bars and extra clutter, it runs fast as well, it is still RAM black hole. I usually shut the system down at night, and reboot a time or two during the day if it needs it

FF5 does not support google toolbar. Mine works. Okay. I got it to work. I just had to go into the tools section and then add ons. I was trying to download it from cnet and it would give me i pop up that said it was not compatible with FF5. All is good now. |

Not compatible with my Kaspersky. So I have to wait until it is

well last night when I clicked on the Firefox desktop icon- it did an automatic upgrade to .ver 5 with no option to cancel.
It crashed 3 times last night before I finally took the update to Flash. Seems to be running well now though. 26 tabs open and 361 MB of RAM used. |
I like the new layout that came with 4. I have no problems other than Gestures and Tabs add ons don't work yet.
Mozbackup took a dump on me once so I don't trust it. Sync so far does what I need. 5 works good so far. |
