I agree-every time I hear about how racing greyhounds are treated I'm ready to strangle someone. I certainly am not any kind of animals rights advocate, I grew up working on farms; but to treat dogs as most greyhounds are treated is despicable.
There are numerous adoption agencies for racing greyhounds-I'll post 'em tonight if no one else does. I have looked into this, but don't have an appropriate run on my property yet. I had a chance to play with a couple of hounds that an adoption agency had at street fair. They seemed like some of the nicest dogs you would ever meet. However adoptions will probably never meet the number of dogs that are "retired" each year. The problem with racing hounds is that they are treated like a commodity, similar to a farm animal-they are worked until no longer useful, then killed. Maybe it's a double standard, but I can't accept treating dogs like chickens. |

POINT-In this remark, I will show why I make Ronald Reagan and Rush look like liberals....
"Alabama authorities say they're considering criminal charges against Rhodes if any of the animals underwent severe pain or were tortured." If he did torture etc.,he was a moron who deserves like treatment, but the Liberal system wont even give him what he WOULD deserve would that be true. I dont see muchpain or torture. I picture a small caliber to the brain. .35 cent bullet, 9.65 profit per animal. Capitalism is a GREAT thing.... Maybe it's a double standard, but I can't accept treating dogs like chickens. I can. If you kill it, EAT IT. Use it, do something with it besides just killing it. The Humane Society gasses a boat load of dogs every year, not a drop of them used for any good. Is that morally better or worse? I say hell no, same immoral(<---key conservative term) result. An animal dead for convienance, without use. Round them all up, put them on a boat, and send them ANYWHERE the people will eat them/use them for whatever. We Americans are so wasteful, and will have to answer for this someday. Put down the PETA brochure, open up a good book (Martha Stewarts Best Recipies FOR your pet) and Preheat that oven to 425.... |

"Humane Society" animal shelters kill millions of unwanted dogs and cats every year. Nothing different about this except the method.
Don't get me wrong, greyhounds are beautiful dogs, but even if they'd gone to the "proper authorities" 99% of them would have still been killed. |

I guess my beef is mainly with greyhound racing. The dogs are caged like veal cattle, pretty much except for racing. Then after a short time of life when they are capable of racing then get a .22 in the head. I suppose that you can rationnally argue that cattle, chickens etc are treated similarly and I admit that greyhound racing (and betting in general) interests me less than mowing the lawn, but something about treating dogs this way makes me want to go down to the greyhound track and do some redecorating with a bulldozer.

Well, I have a plan. Let's reclaim the entire Middle East and convert it into a retirement ranch for unwanted dogs. I think that would be a much better use of the real estate.

Truthfully, I don't see where this guy did anything wrong. If he hadn't put a bullet in their head for $10 then they would have been euthanized with a needle by someone else for twenty.

Here's a link to one of the national greyhound adoption agencies, which also has links to local agencies-[url=]http://www.adopt-a-greyhound.org[/url] They do need frequent walks and cannot be let loose off a leash or outside of a fenced area since they will speed off until they are lost, hit by a car, or break an ankle and they are not exactly the dog you would want on your side in a fight-but I still want one. |
