Had a discussion with a co worker about this. If we look at both sides it really seems like there is no gray area? During Bush's presidency you were called unamerican etc especially the twilight of 9/11 if you questioned his policies. Under Obama you are considered a racist, dumb redneck etc for not like Obama's policies........
My question is really what do you do? I've only run into this a few times. Most of the time I've just brushed it off. Where is the middle ground ?

Ignore the people on both sides who think being on the left/right makes you "OMG the enemy!" and continue on with your life.

It's natural to be a bigot and hate The Others.  Just look at the Birthers.  There is no way they will ever admit Obumer is Native Born.

BUT, truly intelligent people know their inherent bigotries and try their best to ignore them.

Middle ground is liberalism lite.  It marches more slowly towards tyranny than being on the left, but it marches that way nonetheless.

Part of the birther thing was how Obama played it. He played that card for all it was worth. For example, when Michelle went to Kenya and called it "her husband's country" (don't recall exactly what she said, but it had that implication), I think that was actually an INTENTIONAL throw to the birthers. Obama spent a bunch of money paying lawyers when he could have put the issue to rest . . . but he didn't. It is clear to me that Obama (and team) felt the birther thing played to their favor, and they played it for all it's worth.

One thing I think about the birthers is that they were on to something they thought could save the day. Wishfull thinking that a simple thing could end Obama's stint as POTUS.

not sure if serious
During Bush's reign, it was treason to question policy, since he was a war president, and it gave aid to the enemy - at least that is how some characterized it.  Now some characterize dissent as racism.  In both cases its just cowards who hate free speech and democracy.

here is what happened. In the beggining we had lots and lots of freedom and not much entitlement. everyone had to earn their keep.  So little by little the productive didn't mind sharing a bit for those who had a hard time.

Over two hundred years a great deal of the country feels entitled to other peoples work.  About half of the country feels that they have the right to steal from you whether you approve or not simply because you have more. It doesn't matter how much harder you worked to get it.

The other half of the country had seen what was charity become a legion of parasites who do nothing and expect everything. They already have a pretty decent life on welfare. Our poor are like the middle class in most European contrys as far as lifestyle goes.    We feel we are giving enough and that the moochers have enough.

You cannot find a gray area between these two points of view.  The nation is and will be divided because half the nation wants to steal from the other half against their will for things they do not approve of.

This divide canot be repaired and will get worse most likely as time goes by because the current entitlements we had agreed to were a lie and cost more than they were supposed to and the productive are not willing to pay extra for it but those on the dole feel they have a right to it at any price.

I say we have the great american divide.  we dissolve the federal government down to military. We take the old budget and use it to send every liberal to a liberal state and every conservative to a conservative state if they are willing to move.  The government will buy you a house in your new state and give your five years wages to give you time to find a good job and get things going.

Then the federal government stops taxing and doing things,  the liberal states get to be socialists and the conservative states get their freedom.

This will work as long as the conservative states immediately start beuilding walls around them to keep out the liberals that try and come back when their states collapse.

Giving up one square inch of the United States is unacceptable.

They will never stop taking. NEVER.

The end point of such a strategy is 3 of us trying to survive on a snow covered mountain top in Idaho.

Not an inch. They can move to Cuba or Venezuela. They think they'll be happier there and I know I would be if they were there.

We cannot keep compromising with the Bolshevik Left.

That's what has us in the mess we are in.

Compromise here, compromise there....it is endless. The line has moved so far to the left that what we consider the middle is damn near Moscow in the 1930s.

Where is THEIR  compromise?
Where is THEIR "tolerance"?

I've been forced to tolerate them for as long as I can remember. I've watched the whole thing go down from the beginning. Their strategy and tactics have been clear all along. Even to the most ignorant now, in hindsight.

Now THEY can tolerate ME.

LBJ and Carter both pushed pretty hard.
They didn't have the kind of control over govt that the Left did 2008-2010, however.
It was also earlier in the process of what Kruschev called burying us "without firing a shot."
Thusly, they were stick stuck with the incremental approach.

That is done now. It is for all the marbles.
