does anyone have a link for some of the 50BMG ackley dies. I have a friend looking for some. Im not having any luck.
Unless you're talking about a chamber reamer, you don't need dies. Just fireform the brass.
You still need dies to reload them after fire forming. Even if you're just neck sizing, because the standard dies won't get to the base of the neck...the shoulder gets in the way.
The marginal difference you're going to get doing the AI to a .50bmg is really not worth it, imho. If you really wanted to hot rod it, drop it down to .40 and sharpen the shoulder...
AI does have a slight accuracy advantage over the traditional shoulder, too.
Interesting, most AI cartridges have shorter necks due to blowing out the shoulder to increase case capacity. So using regular dies isn't an issue.
Yes, they have shorter necks. You CAN use regular dies, BUT you're not sizing the entire neck down to the shoulder because the shoulder in the die is a shallower angle than the AI case. So, you run the neck into the die untill the shoulder just touches. You'll see a line on the neck where the die sized to. I guess it's not that big a deal, but if you're goind to all the trouble to chamber ream, fire form brass, etc you might as well have the right dies.
You could take a regular die and just relieve the shoulder, if you have a lathe.
