A little off topic, I have a chance to buy a Spanish Mauser 95 that
has been re chambered in .308 but otherwise original for $60.00 is this a
good deal and what should I look for.
If I remember correctly, the small ring Mausers (1893, 1895, 1896) were proofed at 60000 psi. The spanish 1895 mausers were issued as 7 mm Mauser at 46000 PSI. They were converted and are marginally safe with 7.62 NATO which usually runs 50000 PSI. .308 Winchester runs at 60000-62000 PSI. If someone has shot it repeatedly with .308 Winchester, it is a time bomb waiting to go off.
Have the receiver checked for cracks and bolt setback. If it is ok, shoot it only with 7.62 NATO or lower pressure loads. Better yet, re-barrel it to a low pressure load like the 6.5 x 55 swedish mauser cartridge.
