Check for manual mute buttons on the actual speakers themselves.

Check all audio output programs, such as both Windows Sound, and Realtek HD Audio manager to see if it's muted.

That is most likely the case, since it can still detect that sound is being played.  Try a different audio device as well, his speakers may have failed.  Next, as suggested, download new drivers.  Try the front and back audio jacks.  Try multiple programs running sounds.  If none of that works, your audio card may be having a problem.  A new one is $30 or less.

These computers have the SigmaTel High Definition Audio chip in them?  If so I have seen and dealt with a ton of problems with this chip and Windows Vista.

The most common of the problems is that you'll see a red X over the volume control in the system tray and when you hover your mouse over it you'll get a tool tip that says "No audio device found".  But I've had a bunch of similar problems that all seem to have two common denominators.  Windows Vista and cheap onboard sound hardware, usually SigmaTel.

There's only three ways I've found to overcome it.

1.  Install a decent quality sound board that does NOT use a SigmaTel chip and turn off the onboard sound hardware.

2.  Upgrade to Windows 7 doing a clean install.

3.  Do a clean reinstall of Vista and install the correct sound driver before you put in any updates including service packs.  And I've still had the last method work until certain updates are installed, then start up all over again.

Also, and this sounds stupid, make sure his speakers are plugged into the correct jack.

Test out the other ones, the color coding is not always correct.

Even if a user says he didn't unplug anything he did.

You could also try going back to a previous restore point, if they were working at some point.

i've tried all the above other than putting in a new sound card.....he LATER told me his neighbor "came to use the email and brought up porn sites" then the screen went and stayed blank. he called some Larry Vickers wanna-be to fix it, installed some new antivirus jazz and wiped the couple of software things that leaked in... and now there's no sound. i'm wondering if the sound card got f'd somehow. he's going to call the guy back out tomorrow and see wassup.

thanks for the help, hive!
