Hello all, I've been thinking about purchasing a rifle in 17HMR, and was curious as to what most of you are using and why?  Thanks in advance.

We bought Dad a Henry in .17HMR.  That thing is a blast to shoot!

I have a CZ american, I got a good deal. Its a blast to shoot. My 10/22 has only left the safe once since I got it and that was to put it on consignment.

Out of curiosity, why?  What do you like about that 17HMR above 22LR?

I tended to only use my 10/22 to go rabbit/squirrel hunting, the CZ was much handier to walk through the timber with, plus the trigger and accuracy is much better. The 17 is like a laser within 100 meters. Plus, I always bought CCI 22, so the price difference is negligible.
I have policy, that I will check my safe, about every six months or so, and if a firearm hasn't been out in that time it goes. No reason to keep firearms that I don't use. I took the 10/22 and a beautiful Beretta A303 Trap down yesterday.

i have the exact thing cowboy has and I love it.

It is fun to hit stuff at 350 yards with it. I think I am going to duracoat it to a flatter tone though. I just wish I could find higher cap mags.

Some people like to take their time and put the bullet in the same hole as the last, others like to fill a 2 in hole as fast as possible.

Shot my friends .17 and it was a tack driver, 3 shoots one hole at 75 yards. For 20 bucks 550 round of .22 ,I can deal with being 1-1 1/2 inch off at 100yds.

My CZ 452FS shot into 5/8ths of an inch @ 100yds with CCI v-max ammo. Shoulda never traded that one off.

Really ? 350 ? Guess it is windier here because anything over 100 or so we hoped the wind didn't blow because it was off a couple inches then.

The best thing is that when we had our last panic buying, You couldn't find 22 of any kind anywhere.. Everybody still had 17HMR.. and it is scary flat shooting out to 200 yards.. Well for a rim fire that is

In varmint hunting, we call that "a miss"

I don't hunt, but if I did, I would not use value ammo....... I hunt paper and zombies so it's still a good shot

I have two .17 HMRs, a CZ 452 and a Savage 93B17 with the fluted/heavy barrel.  Its really a fun caliber to shoot, and ammo isn't too expensive.  Makes a great critter cartridge out, although I don't find it to be as versatile as a .22 Mag.

Savage FTMFW!

CZ's are fine rifles but I have out shot many of them with Savages.

I have a personal hate for all things marlin

Once you hunt with a 17 rimfire (HMR orHM2) you will never want to go back to 22 lr

I just had to get a 17 HMR a few years ago.  I got a Marlin with a heavy barrel.  It is accurate but I was dissapointed with it, I was hoping that it would blow up ground squirrels better.  The wounds are not much more than a .22 lr  IMHO it was not worth it.  I have a nice 10/22 that I can hit most targets with if I can see them (whistlepigs) and if I really want to reach out there I have .221 fireball, 220 swift, 22-250 and 2 hb ARs.

I LOVE my .17 hmr. It's a savage with the sweet 22 bsa scope on it.

I've used it with success on pigs up to about 150 lbs. Squirrels are no match. Don't try it on birds, they will "poof".

We have a Savage 17 HMR that is a great rifle.  I would give Savage the edge over the competition due to the Accu-Trigger.  It has a very light, clean break and makes tack-driving very doable.  After all, 17HMR is all about tack-driving.

You cannot go wrong with a Savage, Marlin, or CZ, all shoot very well.  The CZ has better fit and finish but that's it.  I have three Marlin 917s that my boys and I shoot prairie dogs with.  I chose the Marlin over the Savage because it just felt better in my hands.  Stuck with it so we could all share magazines, we have 20.  The older Marlins do need trigger work, either a spring swap or a Rifle Basix trigger.  There is a new Marlin model coming out but I have not heard of anyone trying one yet.  Savage does have the nice Accutrigger. You can get a CZ 453 which has a fully adjustable trigger including a set trigger.  Lots of info at www.rimfirecentral.com

I have taken prairie dogs out to ~250 yards with an HMR.

I've had 3 Savage model 93's (sold the 1st one cause I wanted a 10/17 and sold the 2nd to get the new AccuTrigger model).  All of them shot very well.  The non-AccuTrigger models have a lot to be desired in the trigger dept.
Several of my friends have the Marlin 917's and I thought that they had some pretty horrid triggers as well.
I've shot 1 MOA with one of the Marlins and about 1.5 MOA IIRC with one of my old 93's.
I love the caliber.  Pretty handy to have around.

I had a savage w/ bull barrell.  Was a tack driver.  I bought it as a prairie dog gun when I was out in college in west Texas but since moving back to dallas I haven't had an opportuinity to go out to hunt, so I ended up trading it towards another purchase.

It will shoot thumbtacks at 100 yards with Hornady 17gr Vmax's.
