Just walked out to leave this morning and saw two big groups of these on the same tree. Do I leave them alone or kill them with fire?

Kill those mother fuckers. They will destroy every tree in your area.
We had these very bad a few years ago. Townships were actually driving around and burning them out of trees in a bucket truck. |

But if you happen to get more in a place where you can't get to safely with a torch, get one of those bottle sprayers that attaches to the end of a garden hose and mix in a few drops of dish soap and hose the bastards down. |

When there was an infestation of them in New England thirty years ago, you could hear a constant sound emanating from the trees - a combination of the sound of them munching away at every single leaf, and the sound of them defecating on the leaves and the ground below.

Tent caterpillars.
Seriously, you have a major problem and you need to go with all out chemical warfare RIGHT NOW. The main thing is, you didn't get them all. You need to spray your trees right away and every 5 days after for about two-three weeks. The little bastards can populate and then strip a tree in just a few days. They especially like elms, ash and fruit trees. |
