Just walked out to leave this morning and saw two big groups of these on the same tree.  Do I leave them alone or kill them with fire?

Kill those mother fuckers. They will destroy every tree in your area.

We had these very bad a few years ago. Townships were actually driving around and burning them out of trees in a bucket truck.

Yeah, I just bought the house in December.  The previous owner had them on there.  No pipes froze, so It's ok by me.

Update!

The needed tools.  Propane torch and bic lighter.

The aftermath.

Good job!
For future reference, a little bit of dawn dish soap and water mixed into a windex spray bottle works great as well.
Not a satisfying as fire though!

There doesn't appear to be enough char for the worms.

Make an omlette with them.  Then you will have their power.

Good job with the fire.

But if you happen to get more in a place where you can't get to safely with a torch, get one of those bottle sprayers that attaches to the end of a garden hose and mix in a few drops of dish soap and hose the bastards down.

No, weapons, no knives, no measuring device, no stapler and no beverage.

Does that dislodge them, or kill them?  I never would have thought a few drops of soap would kill some caterpillars.

It will kill them. I think its something about the dish soap that reacts with them and they will die in a couple of seconds.
It turns them into a blue green mush.

True.  I'll bump it up to 5/10 with -5 for crappy preparation and serving.

Not so fast.  You're forgetting the "killed-and-cooked-your-own-dinner-automatic-10" rule.

When there was an infestation of them in New England thirty years ago, you could hear a constant sound emanating from the trees - a combination of the sound of them munching away at every single leaf, and the sound of them defecating on the leaves and the ground below.

Good job terminating them with extreme prejudice...

A few years back there was a big hatch of those along one of my favorite trout streams.  I found a big wolly bugger in black and just killed the fish all summer long..

Tent caterpillars.

Seriously, you have a major problem and you need to go with all out chemical warfare RIGHT NOW.  The main thing is, you didn't get them all.  You need to spray your trees right away and every 5 days after for about two-three weeks.

The little bastards can populate and then strip a tree in just a few days.  They especially like elms, ash and fruit trees.

This is what they are. We get big outbreaks here in Minnesota too. If this is a big year for them you'll have a billion moths whipping around in a couple months. They'll make big webs all over the damn place.

They're not gypsy moths. Those guys have red and blue balls, no pun intended.
