I've been seeing this deer around the house for the last week or so. He has a rope caught around his head and neck. What can I do to help this poor guy?

Or just put a bunch of painkillers in some corn and see if that would work.

From the pics, I can't tell if the rope is wrapped in such a way that it will come loose when the antlers drop. Doesn't really look like it, though.

That's a young deer, too. He has lots of potential if he can survive. I'd probably go ahead and end it for him, and enjoy the meat.

Oh, just ignore this guy...

This is actually really good advice.... when he get's close enough, coo to him gently, then grasp him tightly around the neck and wrestle the rope off his rack. It's probably not NEARLY as pointy as it looks.

This should end well for all involved.

Looking forward to reading about this in the news.

The rope looks pretty tight around his neck the way it is now. As the rut kicks in and his neck swells up, he's gonna eventually suffocate.
It looks to be causing him some distress already, he appears rather gaunt..

I think you should just buy a license and pop him, or get somebody else to.

Call Animal Control if you don't want to go that route, but that will probably be an expensive circus without success.

reminds me of a crippled bastard that hung around a feeder I had 2 years ago. broken leg from getting caught in a fence.

also, if you have a friend who is a police officer ask them if they have tags for dear motorist hit. here they have DNR tags for people who hit a deer with their car and then decide to keep the deer, shows they didn't poach it.

This not any different than finding a deer caught hung up in a fence with a broken leg. Shoot him. Sorry to seem cruel,,,look at the rope closely around his neck,,,he is not going to make it,,,,,,he could even get hung up around a stump and be eaten alive by a predator,,,,not a good day to die-think nuts and neck by two coyotes.

I had a breeders permit for many years in Tx. and darting him IS a viable alternative. About forty (preferably twenty) yds is the max. range I darted from. You will need a pro who`s done this MANY times to help you as the learning curve IS VERY VERY STEEP when darting deer. You can easily kill any deer during the darting process. It takes specialized equipment to dart deer properly such as capture boxes for the deer to be placed in after you dart him. The drugs you need will NOT be available to you unless you go through the state for all the permits req`d. With the game warden`s help you might get a one shot deal IF the game warden is comfortable with the individual you ask to do the dart work. This avenue is probably not going to happen. One deer dying is just not the end of the world.

See how hollow his paunch is and how his hips protrude so sharply? And his neck looks like that of a young giraffe.
Anybody who knows anything about whitetails can see that he's already pretty badly stressed...sorry but he's on the way downhill -big time.

DNR probably wouldn't bother coming out. Not worth the cost to them, Texas is full of deer. Best to shoot him and enjoy the venison.

Actually, the photo shows an average 1 1/2 year old Texas buck. If there were no rope tangled up around his head there would be nothing at all remarkable about the way the deer looks.

About the rope, you should shoot him at the next opportunity. The rut will be starting soon and there is a possibility that he will get the rope tangled up with another buck's antlers or get hung up in brush as he is making rubs. This is no big deal. Any game warden would tell you to shoot it after seeing the photos.
