Why do some places ban them?
What are they like as a pet?

"Some places", strangely enough, are the same places that have restrictive laws on gun ownership: Calif., NY, D.C., so I guess it must have something to do with reasonable ferret control, or something. There's no reason _any_body would need to own an evil assault weasel, I suppose.
(The "reason", AFAIK, is, them there polecats could run away and decimate the local grizzly bear population.)



Terminally cute and funny, and aggravating.
Feed the little bugger, clean his ass and water him, and he'll tell you "You're my bestest fwiend!" Then you'll turn around and he'll latch onto your ankles.

I found my totem animal :)

Saw a live morning TV show in the U.K. decades ago. One of the guests was a naturalist who had brought this ferret named "Jiffy".

Naturalist (retired major type – pipe smoker)
Host: Young go-getter, trendy type.

Host: "So what have you brought in for us today?"

Naturalist: "This is Jiffy. He a young ferret" – handing ferret to host. Ferret immediately dashes around host's neck, climbs on his head. Host gingerly takes hold of Jiffy and holds him on lap, stroking ferret.

Host: "Well, he's certainly a frisky little guy. Tell me...JESUS CHRIST!...Wow! That fuf, fuh. That hurts!" – as Jiffy sinks his teeth into fleshy part of host's hand (on live TV). Host's notes going flying in the air.

Naturalist: "Oh, yes. You've got to be careful with ferrets, you know." Leaning back, puffing his pipe, apparently completely unconcerned. Makes no attempt to interfere or help.

Host: "Yeah, but look at the little basta'...he's got his teeth..." – Close-up of Jiffy, eyes twinkling, teeth sunk deep into host's hand, blood seeps from hand on to floor. Host is restrained from strangling cute little Jiffy on live TV, but would clearly love to. – Host: (wincing), We're gonna take a break RIGHT NOW!"

Yup, I have 2. Wish I had pictures to post but I don't.

Mine was a black-eyed white.  Beautiful.  Dissappeared a couple of weeks ago.  We've been having a lot of Bald eagles and hawks around here lately and I fear the worst...

I have 2, they are the coolest pets.

I have had a few in the past.  I can't count the times I would just let them loose to play and would be laughing at the antics they'd get into.  They are cool pets.  

Cool ferrets people.  Very cute.

What I find funny is that ferrets are illegal here, yet every pet store if full of ferret products.

We used to have a pet rat (the cute fellow in the picture) and it was hard to find an appropriate rat cage, yet there must have been five different ferret cages, along with a ferret starter kit.

I had six when I was married to my first wife.  All of them went with her in the divorce.  They are the greatest pets, ever.  Matilda, Gus, Toes, Pogo, Small Pink Ferret, and Roland must now all be dead or very ancient for ferrets but I haven't forgotten them.  When my daughter gets a little older I plan on getting a ferret or two.
In my experience, their reputation for ferocity is undeserved.  They simply play rough and don't understand that human hide isn't as tough as ferret hide.

They have been banned for a couple of reasons:

1. Undeserved reputation of ferocity perpetuated by ignorant or even false media portrayal (big surprise).

2. Undeserved fear of rabies spread even though there has NEVER been a single incident of a ferret-to-human transmission of rabies and only 25 total cases in US history of rabies in feral animals.

3. It is not an indiginous species to many places and there exists a reasonable fear in some places that mass ferrets released into the wild with the potential to breed would upset the natural ecosystem. I can agree with this in Hawaii. However, in other places in the contenintal US the near extinction of the North American Blackfoot has actually permitted the prarie dog population to explode to the detriment of the cattle ranchers.

They are awesome pets. They are better than any cat or dog I have ever owned. They are much smarter (IMHO) and will perpetually play play play play play hard throughout their entire lifespan of 6-8 years average. They are a handful and most ferrets that end up in shelters are a result of their owners not having done any research and grossly underestimating the efforts. It's sort of like having a couple of two-year-olds on a case of Mountain Dew when they are out. However, they sleep an average of 15-18 hours a day and are quite contented little buggers when they are in their cage.

Even though 99.9% of them are descented by their breeders when they are old enough, they still have a musky smell but as long as you change their bedding and keep their cage clean you can keep it to a minimum. You can also bathe them every couple of weeks but this actually increases the smell over time as you are removing their essential skin oils. This can also cause dry skin disorders.

You can litter train them over time with a pretty good success rate, but it takes patience (just like a two year old in potty training). Their dookies don't smell at all so it's not even like having a cat box.

Overall they are like a kitten with a leather jacket (attitude). They are so much fun and have phenomenal personalities, but they are a lot of work and I would not recommend them as pets to people who travel excessively or only want one to show off to their friends. They require a lot of attention and playtime which would interrupt with a party schedule. They are mostly good with kids, but I highly recommend them as pets for older pre-teens or teens. The commitment and patience is not something that a younger child will be capable of sustaining over a period of time.

I did want a Ferret, but am thinking of getting a Shorland now...it is roomier, more of family armour....It has a turret though, I can mount my 1919A4

They seem really cool, fun, and unique. I hpe I can own one someday - it would fit right in with the Beagle and American Pit Bull Terrier.

i have two, they are the funniest things in the world. play or sleep, thats about all they do.

mine bothe get along quite well with the dogs, and are not aggressive at all.

My sis had one.

It was ok, but id did smell musky (she swore she could not smell it at all) to the point that I thought it stunk, and she said it had been de-scented.

It was cool to play with, but had an attitude like a cat, on steiroids, and you could never trust the thing not to bite you at the weirdest times.

Why anyone would want one of these for a pet is beyond me.

We are on our third ferret, having lost the previous two. Our first baby, Dufey, got out during some remodeling we were having done and the neighbor's dog got him. Our second, Maximus, died after a protracted illness due to kidney failure. We now have Dart and are protecting him like the family treasure!
The ferrets have been the best pets we have had, we also have a Rottweiler, a Scotty, a Schnauzer, and a white Persian cat. Of all of them, we love little Max the best and spoil him as such. And yes, the Molly (the Rottweiler) also loves little Dart. He uses Molly to get around by riding on her back.[:D]

i have 14 snakes, 3 cats, and a dog.

this is bobcat...hes a bengal cat, 6-12% asian leopard cat the rest is domestic cat.  he's cool!

edited to add:  How big is 'Mary'?  She looks huge...

she is about 4'-6" long but maybe 1-1/2" diameter at the thickest...in otherworkds she's about the size of a worm compared to your typical well known large pythons and boas.

after she sheds(she is very ugly right now) ill put a 5.56 round next to her for size comparison and take a pic hehe.
