So someone help me out here you got the M1 garand that was 3006 and then after that came the M-14 which was 308 then the M-16 came around in 223. so whats the difference between M1 and M-14 they look like they are similar right?

Yes they look similar. The M14 is basically a magazine fed Garand in .308.

Yeah, what HE said.

Also, other differences:

1. The Garand is a little heavier.
2. The gas (operating) system on the M14 is slightly more rugged and reliable.
3. The Garand was never intended for full-auto use. The M14 was. It was a big mistake, but some M14s were intended as squad automatic weapons. One reason the M16 replaced the M14 so quickly was the disaster the '14 was in full auto fire mode.

In addition, the M1 Garand can be re-barreled in .308, and still use the original 8-rd en-bloc clips.

well, a Real M-14 is select fire.

Best alternative is the Springfield Armory M1A (semi-auto version) or its variants. (see other posts here on the M1A) Stay away from the chinese version!

the M1A kicks @ss, and the M1 is great too, got both and wouldn't have it any other way [:)]

They're 'spensive. [:D]

M1A will run you about the same as an AR10 (around 2 G) BUT the mags are cheaper.

Yes, these should both be on any gun lovers "must have" list.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program, listed above, looks like the best way to get a good M1 Garand for shooting. The website describes the few hoops you have to jump through to get one.

I don't know of a cheaper M1A manufacturer. Fulton Armory makes 'em too-they are on the industry forum, but I don't think they are any cheaper. Check gusamerica.com and the "Gun List" and "Shotgun News" but I don't think you are going to find a nice $ 700 M1A.

Norinco made some cheapie M1A's I heard that they were unreliable junk.

Think about a Garand. A good shooter shows up used for a reasonable price sometimes- $ 600+. They are great shooters and are neat-the rifle that won WWII. When I was a kid that's what they taught you to use to teach you High power shooting. You give up capacity 8 rounds v. 20 for the M1a but the 30-06 has a reputation for having a bit more stopping power, plus once you get the hang of it a Garand is amazingly fast to reload. Also I'd bet no Assault rifle ban anywhere will ever effect the garand

I remember seeing a retired general on CNN before we were sending troops in Haiti-the press had made a big deal about the Haitians having old WWII Garands and the general said something like our troops will have no problems because they are marines fighting rabble, but the garand is still one of the deadliest rifles ever devised so don't discount it if it's carried by a trained rifleman.

I wonder what that so-called general would've thought about troops being picked off at 1200 yards, well out of range of the .223?

Of course the Haitians probably very well couldn't shoot like that, it'd take some Marines to do that. Just ask the Germans in WW1 at Belleau Woods. >gg<

No. Used ones are usually preban and worth even more. Owners of postbans ain't in a big hurry to get rid of them cheap.

How come you have to be in some shooting club to buy one of the Garands? Seems dumb to me. Also, since Springfield is reissuing 10,000 of them. Think their more for putting on the wall or actually shooting them? Their website says collecters item. Don't know if by slim chance I'm able to get my hands on one of the 10,000 if I should just let it collect dust or not.

Oh nevermind, new ones have an authenticity certificate so guess its only for show. Nuts.

Lot of info on the GFD Forum. I also am on the market for both the M1A and M1 Garand. My quandry is which to buy.
Do a search on each-lots of info.
Sounds as if the Sprigfield M1As are having problems with their cast parts-no longer USGI. Can't understand why in the hell you would make a cast op rod.

Be on the lookout for guys (or gals) selling their CMP Garands. These can generally be had for $500-$600. I've gotten 2 that way. At the other extreme, collector Garands can set you back as much as a good M1A.

The Chinese M1As have a decent receiver in them. If you want to replace a few parts with USGI you can build a pretty decent gun from one. Lacking that, a used Springfield Armory gun is probably your best bet.

My preference is the M1A for a couple of reasons:

1. My dad had an M14 in the army (Vietnam).
2. I always loved the look of the M14.
3. I like detachable mags.
4. It is made in the USA (I know, so was the Garand).

I have to say, though, my real favorite in .308 is the FAL. I own a DSA and absolutely love it. Recently bought a "zero-movement" mount and nice Nikon scope that put me directly on the "X" at 100yds. We're talking <.5 moa! With an FAL! The unit is their medium contour stainless model.

the m1 garand was also made/converted to .308 for some purposes and actually used in small numbers, qualifying the caliber in garands as sewrvice rifle
the coast guard still uses m-14s on boarding parties and as ship's armament, although they are being phased out slowly, they'll probably be around for a while. just like you can still see NG units armed with vietnam era m16a1's

Ahhh of course. I never saw it abbreviated before.

I couldn't figure out what it stood for at first. GFD = Garands For Dummies?? [8D]

Edited just to add that M1A/M14 is mostly an improved M1 Garand. Before spending the big bucks on an M1A, try a less expensive M1 and see how you like it. You can always sell it towards an M1A if you like. Personally though, I like my CMP Danish M1!
