Should we opt-out our 8th grade son?

From the principal:

The White House recently announced that President Obama will make his second annual Back to School address Tuesday, September 14th to the school children of America.  Last year, students in the district and across the nation had the opportunity to view the President's speech live as he encouraged them to stay in school, study hard, and take responsibility for their education.

The following is the TSMS plan for viewing the broadcast:
1.       Students can view the pre-recorded broadcast during their Power Hour class.
2.       If the broadcast airs after their Power Hour class, the address will be available in the library during all lunches or the following day in Power Hour.
3.        If parents choose to have their students “opt out” of viewing the broadcast, you must return the attached letter to their Power Hour teachers by September 14th.   All students not viewing the broadcast may report to the library with work or a book to read.

Opt-Out Letter...

The White House recently announced that on Tuesday, September 14th, President Obama will make his second annual Back to School address. Last year, students in the district and across the nation had the opportunity to view the President's speech as he encouraged them to stay in school, study hard, and take responsibility for their education.  The exact time and length of the address will be posted on our district web site, www.kellerisd.net, when it is released by the White House.

All Trinity Springs Middle School students will have the opportunity to view the President’s address during their Power Hour classes.  If students miss the broadcast, or their Power Hour classes are prior to the broadcast, they will have additional viewing opportunities in the library.  On Wednesday, the early morning Power Hour classes that met before Tuesday’s speech will have an opportunity to view the address.

If parents do not want students to watch the broadcast, teachers will dismiss them from their classes to the library during that time without penalty

By signing and returning this letter, you are choosing for your child to opt out of the viewing of the Presidential Address on September 14, 2010, at Trinity Springs Middle School.

By not signing below, you are giving your student permission to view the Presidential Address on September 14, 2010, at Trinity Springs Middle School.

Just talk to them about what he says if he says anything you take issue with. They'll learn a lot more from a learning conversation with mom or dad then what they hear once a year from some jackass on TV.

Guess I better start drafting another email to the Superintendent of Schools.

It worked last time. Me and a bunch of other parents got Obama Bin Zero pulled from the schedule and relegated to download from the school website only.

Wonder if they went to as much trouble to make broadcasts of any of Bush's speeches available to all the kids w/ multiple showings like that, etc?  Just curious.

IIRC Bush did a few of these and there was a shitstorm from the libs. If it were up to me I would give my kid a choice to watch or not; any child of mine would be immune to the lies of the Terrorist in Chief anyway.

I wonder if they take note of who explicitly asks to remove their child.

I also wonder if they keep those slips. Sorry, tinfoil is tight as of late.

I thought permission slips worked the other way. In all my years of school I NEVER had a slip that said send this in if you do not want something to happen! How do they even know you had the opportunity to see the slip before the 14th?

He's in 8th grade?  He doesn't need to hide behind your aprone anymore.  Let him listen and then have him come home and give a critique. He's almost a man.  Men do not need to be protected from ideas they disagree with.
