Spent 9 years in the Air Force. Communications. 3C0X1. I'm sure it's changed to some other AFSC at this point.
Like all things, it's what you make of it. But after 9 years, the dream turned into a nightmare. I got out while I still had some sanity left. |

I was in during the ATC strike and President Reagan called their bluff and fired them. MANY of our air force ATCs were shipped out TDY to civilian airports to run ATC operations. They got out of the air force in droves shortly after that to take civilian ATC civil service positions - often at twice the pay right off the bat. IF you have good spatial skills and a good short term memory for this sort of thing, it can provide a great career path. You will have to be able to visualize "patterns" very well in three dimensions. At that time, I worked ATC facility maintenance and often looked over their shoulders as they worked aircraft in pattern. I remember the first time one of the giant C-5A models declared an emergency and diverted into our base at Lajes Field. None had ever been there before. The aircraft commander transmitted: "Lajes approach control, Tango 35 declaring emergency. Request immediate clearance" The ATC controller transmitted back: "Tango 35, roger, say aircraft type." Response was: "Lockheed Charlie Five Alpha." The controller then transmitted course correction heading and all of the other clearance info. Needless to say, we all were eager to get our first look at that big sucker. She landed about 20 minutes later trailing black smoke out of number two engine. Nobody hurt and no aircraft accident, thank God. I think they had to fly maintenance crew and a new engine in from Dover AFB to fix her as she sat for about a week or so on one of taxiways. She was too big for our hangars as I remember. Ah, the memories of that ATC facility. Get the job contract on paper! |

Plus you'll be aircrew with flight pay and better accommodations while deployed. 1A3X1 is airborn comm, should be able to get a decent job afterwards. But there are much better AFSCs for comm jobs for post-service. But they arent aircrew. |

In Okinawa, my dorm had firefighters, ATC's and boomers (boom operators). Since we all worked odd hours, every day was Friday for us. We threw parties so often, a rumor started that we were dealing in drugs and prostitution. The SF's raided our dorm on more than one occasion.
I was 3E7X1 for 7 years and loved it. |

You need to talk to a recruiter. When I was recruiting in 2006, you had to be in basic training by your 28th birthday. The Guard or Reserves may be your only choice.

#1........NEVER go open-general! Unless you like driving busses
#2.......get a FUN job! Small Arms, survival instructor, ect. #3......DO NOT let the recruter tell you, "Oh, there aren't any of the good jobs open right now, but if you'll do "X" you can cross train later..........LOAD OF HORSE SHIT! #4......Second enlistment you can try for something more marketable in the civilian world. |

Best of both worlds...Airborne RED HORSE (combat civil engineering units). I was in RH my first 3.5 years. We didn't have the Airborne slots back then, but we did get slots for Ranger school. If things haven't changed you will still get to play with guns in pretty much any position in a RED HORSE unit.

Get a flying billet if you can. Particularly if you LIKE flying.
What are your aptitudes and inclinations? If you're the kind of guy who likes working with electronics, like me, go for avionics technician. The AF has a LOT of electronics field jobs. If you're into engines, go for jet engine mechanic. (Don't get sucked in!) If you like to fly around in the air, chauffered by officers, passing gas and getting paid for it, and giving orders to officers, then become an aerial refueling specialist. |
