I grew up in St. Louis and had some family that worked at MDD and got to see the last ccouple they made and the first couple of F-15's. I used to go out to the end of the runway and watch the Missouri ANG fly them.
My uncle used to say every F-4 took off with two in flight emergencies, it was out of gas and on fire. |

After the test and evaluation, all F-4Es (except the ones flown by the Thunderbirds) we retrofitted with slats. This is a Block 48 jet, the first block to receive the TISEO pod, which is still fitted to the plane today. Edit: Derp. Your friend......is an asshole. |

Sometimes they'd drop down on bombing runs and we'd be there with dozens of helicopters. They'd start weaving through our formations until they found a hole in the sky above them and head back up.The closest pass I had with an F4 full of bombs was in the range of 200 feet. At those speeds it was the blink of an eye. It's amazing how much can happen in the blink of an eye.
We were under some B-52's during an Arclight one time, as well. The eye in the sky, Peacock Radar, came up on Guard and told the helicopters south of Kontum to turn right immediately. As we turned, I looked up to see B52's and a whole bunch of bombs. I lost sight of the bombs when they got low enough to blend into the background terrain, but I got to see and hear them when they hit the ground. Kontum was a very scary place. I've seen a couple Arclights from the ground that dropped while I was well inside the exclusion zone. We'd fly up from Pleiku in the morning and park on top of tank tracks left by T-54's the night before. At one time I had the data plate from a Russian T-54 main gun that I pried off the tank with my K-Bar. Another time, F4's were dropping napalm over our heads. We were sitting on the airfield, in the city, with a couple gunships and F4's were coming in from the north and releasing their canisters in front of us. The canisters would tumble over our heads and hit targets to the south of us. Sometimes we'd get chased off the airfield by small arms fire, mortars or artillery. Occasionally, a helicopter would be hit and people would get wounded or killed. |

They both are QF-4s, just one of them is painted up nice for Heritage Flight duties. QF-4s can still be flown by a pilot in the cockpit. 
When being flown as drones they are controlled from the ground and takeoff from a different runway. The runway next to where these are parked is the one used. Those QF-4s are parked on what is called Death Row.

The basic description of a MiG is: if you put enough power on it, you can make a rock fly.

I'll have to post a bunch of pic's of my dad when he was an F4 pilot. I grew up around them, and later when I joined the AF, I got to play around them until the new era of computer jets took over. I can remember the days when you could see them before you hear them and they are loud bitches. Always has and always will be my favorite aircraft.

I was an instrument/autopilot/INS guy on some of the same tails after Spang closed. We (561FS) were the last active duty G model squadron, so we got all the leftover airplanes from Spang and George. I had the same love/hate relationship with them. I can't say I didn't get a big smile of my face when I saw one of our two worst jets painted up in drone colors.  As for the rest of the jets, it's a damn shame, but better than rotting away in the boneyard for three decades. |

I worked at an RAF base for 20 years as an MoD aircraft engineer.
I've worked on Gnats,Canberras,Jet provost,Hawk,Jaguar,Tornado,Buccaneer,Victor and parts from all sorts But my favorite was the F4. We had a station test pilot who used to do all the air tests for the toombs. Sqn Ldr Pearce was the most misserable cantancorous old fart you could ever meet...F700 nightmare But shit did he do the buisness when it came to doing flybys for the engineers who kept the birds flying. Here he is flying between the hangars at an RAF base near me

I love that shot of the VX-4 "Vandy 1" going transonic. There's a pretty funny story about the bunny tail art. Basically, Playboy sent a letter to the Navy telling them if they're going to use it, do it right. Iv'e got a gentleman and his wife been eating with me for years at my pizza place...REAL nice guy. Flew a ton of missions with them in Nam. I never knew he was a combat pilot till one day i was discusing a drawing i did in high school of a Phantom that i loved and the dang art teacher said she "lost" it. He said "yup, i loved the Phantoms too". Needless to say i love it when he and his wife come for a pie

I flew so many 'missions' in an F-4E that God knows how many hours I spent. My favorite was the custom mission designer where you could pick your aircraft and the the opposing A/Cs and the orientation and number and etc. After I would rack up my kills, I would then watch the 'video' form different angles. That brings back memories!
