Not urban combat but in the rural areas. Seems like a long distance. What is the average combat engagement distance for most firefights? ETA: The reason I ask is I find it amazing when I watch footage from over there that our troops are shooting at people that I can't even see. I too would like to know. |

The approximate distance from the geographical center of the United States to Kabul, Afghanistan is 7,300 miles, so I'd say ... 7,300 miles.

I would think that at those distances the M4 issue weapon would be a fair bit behind the power of a bolt .308 sniper weapon or the M-14 for infantry issue equipment.Going thru the rags also would slow down the light M-16 bullets

At sufficient distances that there was a paper put out by the military about how the M4 couldn't hold it's own at 500 yard shots at dynamic targets.

Or they set a dshk up behind a hilltop and use the ballistic arc to walk rounds in on a position with the help of a durka spotter with an icom or roshan while you try like hell to find them and a mortar crew at the same time. |

Seen ak's at damn near a kilometer, mortars, recoiless rifle, even a KPV russian machinegun at about two kilometers from a giant ass hill. |

There have also been reports of Taliban, particularly those who actually have some idea of how to shoot (Afghanistan may have a culture of marksmanship, but it took a big hit by the Soviets), using Lee-Enfields, Mausers, and Mosin-Nagants for longer range fire and even developing tactics to best employ those men (in Marjah, apparently). I recall reading one report of Taliban weapons captured and one of them was a 12-bore rifle
