Apparently during development of the Raptor rocket engine SpaceX discovered a new super-strong cryoformed Stainless steel type alloy that allowed them to skip building it out of composites and accelerate development.

They are now building the grasshopper-type upper stage test article in Texas:

Starship/BFR will be the largest, most powerful rocket ever built

Have to wait for the "big reveal"

Hopefully there isn't a marching band like NASA's SLS rollout

This is an interesting detail. Due to advancements in Raptor design, they will use commercially available methane without the need for additional refinement.

Environmental destruction is the reason why we'll need to leave this planet. There was a documentary on this, I think it was called Wall-E or something.  Chances of us fucking up the next planet? 100%.

funny how their more environmentally friendly infrastructure they planned to build was scrapped to appease the environmental study.

Desalination is a very energy intensive process and the brine produced from it has to be disposed of somewhere. It's not like we are allowed to just go around dumping things in the sea anymore. What do you think this is? The year 1912?

crazy isn't it? heaven forbid their solar powered desalination plant puts the ocean salt back in the ocean.

I'd buy a Starship-shaped SpaceX sea salt grinder.

(Now say that 5 times fast!)

Process the effluent from the plant into table salt. Put it into starship shaped salt grinders and sell them as collectibles.

A minuscule, immeasurable increase in salinity due to a desalination plant is totally different than the same minuscule increase in salinity caused by evaporation on a slightly higher than average temp day.

Eh....in this case, it's a valid concern.  The concentrated brine solution that the desalinization process generates as a byproduct......is pretty gnarly if you just dump in back into the water.  Probably better to divert it to a salt production/evaporation operation.

Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) is the green light.  If they found a significant impact, then an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) would be required and there goes 2 years.  I still worry, in a previous career we always went straight to the EIS.  We thought it too risky some environmental group would find an activist court to pull our FONSI and we would have to start from scratch on the EIS.

Yeah, they’re going to need oceans worth, just like Fukushima!

On a serious note, he’s got a point, probably need to dump the salt somewhere with strong currents sufficiently away from shore.
