My wife says she didn't realize I was serious. My 75 y/o dad swears it is the product of my realizing I am now middle age and my effort to rebel against it. My two older brothers think I'll crash and burn and end up in the ER before the end of the year.
A little back story: Back in the late 80's and 90's, I was a motocross rider. I was fairly decent at it, too - enough so to gave sponsors and very limited factory support. But that was over 25 years ago! I am past my optimal weight, I feel like shit because I HATE going to the gym, and I eat bad. So last week, I made a promise to myself, I am going to get into motocross shape again. I am going to race the Vet class on my brand new YZ125X. I hope I can be competitive eventually. I'd like to win a race someday soon. Soon being probably 6 months to a year of training and practicing. Got my first good ride in today and I feel it already, but in a good way! The endorphins are still pumping, though. Tomorrow gon' hurt! Anyway, here it is. That's my happy, out of shape ass on the left, and my Dad, the one-time best MX dad/mechanic/sponsor in all of Northeast Texas! Attached File Attached File |

Frankly that sounds like a good goal and a healthy choice given your background.
I wish you the best, hope you avoid injury, and get your win. |

BTDT... Just remember, things don't heal so fast now at our age...

Both my kids work for companies that make replacement hips, etc. Let me know what you need, might be able to get you a discount.

I sprained my ankle twice in a row while coaching tball and now I can't even go on a run... So enjoy your hobbies while you still can. |

Good for u.
I was off dirtbikes for 20yrs and picked up a ktm 350 last year. I love it. |

Someone needs to change their avatar pic
In all seriousness, nice! |

My cousin (also a Marine) did what you are planning to do. He wrecked his old ass pretty bad on a MX course.
Good for you setting goals, but be careful. We don't heal like we used to... |

I am saying good for you....
I raced MX in the mid 70's, Elsinore 125....and I would like to do that again. So go do it. |
|
Ride it like you stole it! My knees ache just thinking about it...

rad.
I'm picking up my first moto this year at 45. Been racing mountain bikes for almost 25 years so I am hoping that helps me out on my transition to gas. Skipping the whole e-bike thing, they cost almost as much as the beta 390 rr-s I'm picking up! |

I suspect you're gonna want to revisit your anti-exercise, anti-healthy eating platform after about 5 minutes ripping on the bike. Not sure which happens first: arm pump vs out of breath

Love it! The flesh is gonna rot off your bones sooner rather than later. It won’t care what shape the bones are in at that time.
My ACL replacement from last ski season is almost ready for me to ski this season. |

Can't think of a more fun way to get in shape and lose weight. Beats sitting in front of a TV eating snacks every night.

Just turned 40 and did the same thing OP, except I bought an older YZ250 and didn't really have plans on racing. I got a lot of shit from my GF and a few buddies. Ignore it and enjoy doing what you like, life is short.

Oh man, I was a sponsored snowboard/skater in the late 90's
I still love to snowboard occasionally but you won't see me doing competitions anymore. Decades later I have screws, plates, and scars to remind me of my younger stupidity. It's a constant reminder every time I run or lift weights due to the pain. Enjoy riding, but if you're a competitive guy I'd stay away from trying to compete. No way I'd want to spend another year learning how to open a car door lol |

Have fun! And, when you end up in the ER, tell them you’re uninsured and will pay cash. You’ll get a lot better deal.

Have fun!
Oh, and I hope you run Klotz. That smell is pure sex. |

I’m 51 and ride have a 2004 RM125 and a 2006 RM 250. I love riding the 125....fast but requires you to work for the speed. Go forth and shred some berms.

Good luck. I don't know anything about dirt bikes other than the fact that my DR650 is not a good one. In my circle of friends here a few of them race and are old fat dudes. They seem to have a blast. Think Vegas to Reno is happening either now or soon and they were excited about it.

Good Job OP!
(I just bought a BMW 1200 GSA this week as a pat on the back/mid life crisis) |

Have fun. Don’t burn out your clutch with all your extra poundage.

Get some new bike in a can to help with clean up and detailing. Nice bike!

Good luck! That YZ125X is supposed to be a really awesome machine. I gave up the MX track and moved to off-road which I find more challenging without the high speed risk of the motocross track. I still get pretty beat up but knock on wood my only broken bones have been from MX.

My brother is the best spinal fusion surgeon on the west coast.
Let me know when you break your back and I’ll refer you. |
