Yes, I know there is a sub for knives but I see cool shit posted here in GD by people who aren't in the sub then forget what the title of the thread was and then get bored trying to search through every random knife related thread in GD.

This is what I usually carry for long bike rides:

But it's got a hump?

Was it designed by Sinkevich?

Does WIC subconsciously like the D?

Regardless, I must admit, it is a nice looking knife.

The chisel-ish grind really works well for cutting pork if you push against the ceramic plate hard enough and saw back and forth a bit.

Don't worry, that 154CM is tough and you can flip that ceramic plate over and sharpen it on the bottom of it when you're done.

Chisel grinds are easy anyway since you only have to sharpen one side.

Oh that would've been way simpler than using my work sharp ken onion to put a nice convex edge on the beveled side.

It's an Emerson. Crayon eating Marines can sharpen them on a rock or with a bastard file. No need for power tools.

I would guess the CPM version costs more and isn't really worth the increased cost.

I seem to recall from way back, kuraki provided something showing the granular structure on both 154CM and CPM154. The CPM 154 was much more evenly spread supporting the idea that it would have better edge retention, so it stands to reason it would be harder to sharpen.

But I seem to recall the person reviewing the granular structure determined in testing, no prominent difference in performance.

Which if that is the case, I guess, why bother. I don't think I have had any CPM154 in quite some time. Bunch of 154CM.

You misspelled 8F.
The Tiger feels REALLY good in the hand as well.

Emerson's are one of those knives that may not look so pretty in pictures, or on paper....but come alive in the hand.

Ernie has it figured out.

Seriously though, I love all the steel options out there, I'm a big fan of the super steels, but on a knife intended as a tool, 154 is a great baseline stainless steel. Lot of custom makers still use it. BRK was using it as one of their main stainless steels on their big fixed blades (but I wouldn't be surprised if they switch over to S45VN entirely now that that is available).

From the makers side it is easy to work with, grinds easy and takes a nice shine. Performance wise it has good durability, takes a nice edge, decent retention, it is easy to sharpen. It is American made (Emerson is big on that).

Emerson is all about making his stuff as easy as possible for people to work with. If you are in the middle of nowhere, you will still probably be able to find a Phillips head or slotted screwdriver to work on your knife if needed. Dull? Sharpen it on the top edge of your car window or the bones of your enemies. No diamonds necessary (but they do make it easier).

He has used S35VN on limited runs and dealer exclusives and I think on the XHDs, which is still in line with the brand image, otherwise they used ATS-34 up until ~2000ish and then went to 154. It fits with their whole brand persona. Pretty sure he uses 154 on his customs too.

Would I like to see them switch over to S45VN? Yeah. Will 154 stop me from getting them? Nope. I like 154.

I still think yours was a one off....
My Emerson Commander is over 20 years old, carried daily, used all sorts of inappropriately, and the logo is just starting to wear off.
No chipping.

Regardless, you use your knives hard, and I'd be hard pressed to argue against your observations.

It may also have been new edge chips, like with Spydercos. Sharpen down to the good material.
