I'm willing to invest in a tier one out the front auto knife. Needs to be seriously strong, clip point, and non serrated.
What's out there other than Hogue and Microtech that is worth looking at? |

Microtech, Benchmade, and Protech (protech is mostly side opening autos) are kinda the big three. But there's lots out there.

doing similar shopping now, and I've owned a benchmade/HK, 2 microtechs, and currently carry a protech. Getting a Combat Troodon when I find one I like.

Halo's...for all their hype, don't even have a safety.
Or do they now?... |

Ravencrest has a great warranty, so I went with them rather than benchmade or microtech.
If you use it enough, and use it hard it will probably have issues eventually. From what I've read its sort of a pain to get the big names to fix the knife. |

I've got problems with Microtech going back to the MSAR days. That along with their shitty customer service, I have no desire to ever buy another Microtech product. I was only half joking about the lightning, but if i was looking to spend some money I would be looking at that new Benchmade.

If you have access to govx their prices on the Benchmade Infidel are about $100 off of you go that route.

I bought a Benchmade Phaeton but because of the laws here in IL I carry a Lightening. I wouldn't feel bad about losing a $35 knife.

Lightning But it's $35 and I do like mine. Bladehq doesnt list them, grindworx does and their site looks identical to hq. Never used grindworx. |

THIS is what I'd get if money were no object. No movement in the blades when locked open.

I've always had good luck with Schrade knives. I know the cool kids find them undesirable, but I've yet to have one let me down, even in some extreme conditions.
I don't know what on earth I would use something like this for. I guess if I have to ask,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, |

My dog hates that sound. The best part of the OTF knife is closing it one-sided. That is real handy when you are breaking down boxes. View Quote I know, not as cool. |

This. If you spend several hundred dollars on a OTF to keep in a box, more power to you. If you want an inexpensive but useful OTF, get a lightning. I have several, and they're quite good. For the money they're unbeatable. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

For the "in the hand" feel and general use, its in this order: Combat Troodon, Scarab, Ultratech.
For in-the-pocket carry and size as a focus its: Scarab, Ultratech, Combat Troodon. If you can get away with a large EDC, go Combat Troodon. Unfortunately for me$, Ultratechs always felt kinda anemic in blade size/width, and that goes for the handle also. I've owned several and still have one, but rarely carry it. The Scarab is the best compromise, in 1.) size and 2.) heft, between an Ultratech and a Combat Troodon from my experience (currently have 1 Scarab and 2 Combat Troodons). |
|
I have an ultratech and a UTX-70
I love both of them. If I were going to get an OTF that I tust for "combat" or something serious it would be a Halo though. |
