I picked this guy up thinking it was a garter, but as soon as my brain kicked in I dropped it.

Then I killed it

Around here they are suspected rattlesnakes until proven otherwise.

This one's a San Diego variety gopher snake.  BIG sucker.  I rescued it.

It was a DeKay's snake,100% harmless and very disinclined to bite. Is there a particular reason you picked up a snake that you couldn't identify and then killed out of ignorance, other than ignorance? Picking up snakes that one can't identify isn't very bright but killing a completely inoffensive one in panic is pretty dumb.

I used to raise them when I was a kid, they gave birth to live young.

Their only defense when caught in the wild (retrieved from under a rock or small log) is to crap on your hand.

The hell it is.  A baby copperhead has a color pattern very similar to that of a full grown adult, and it has an unmistakable chartreuse tail color.

I lived in AK for more than a couple of decades, I've encountered black bears, brown bears, on one occasion a polar bear, wolves, moose and badgers, all animals which can kill you because you they're having a bad fur day.

Those I can deal with, snakes on the other hand scare the hell out of me because I haven't dealt with them.

I was looking for one yesterday to introduce my 1 yr old to snakes. It's sad so many grown men act like little bitches when confronted with nature.

My old boss almost shit himself one day at work when I picked one up. He started cussing me and swearing he knew someone in high school that was killed instantly by one of those "ground rattlers". Fucking retard.

I'm a snake idiot and I know that's a dekays.

We had a nest (that or disrupted a snake orgy) when we moved a flower bed.  It was a ball of a bunch and f them.

Now that I know they are harmless I might pick one up the next time I find one.

No he won't;  because those tiny snakes (9-12 inches is their adult average length) are too small to devour rodents.

They survive mostly on earthworms.

I found a snake in pieces out in the frontage road looked like the nice sized pine snake we had living in a wood pile...neighbor came over on my side
of the road to run it over with his lawn mower swearing to me he saved me and our dog from death by rattlesnake.

I went in and printed out pictures of timber rattlers, pine snakes, and bull snakes so he wouldn't kill anymore...naturally he's still bitching about
gophers...

Welcome to GD where we are fine with you killing anything unless it doesn't have arms or fins.  If it doesn't have arms or fins then we automatically treat it like it's on the bad end of the endangered species spectrum and flip out if you dare lay a finger on it.
