My wife is currently in med school. Doctors are getting out of the business at an alarming rate because of Obamacare.
She's very concerned about what the state of medicine will be when she finishes her residency. |

View Quote It will be like the DMV. seriously though it will happen where primary care is not done by a doctor. it will be a P.A. or nurse practitioner and a Dr. will be the two up person. Hope everyone enjoys not seeing a real Dr. for most of their needs. |

My brother in law is a thoracic (Heart) surgeon. He just stopped practicing this year. He is ~57.
Heart surgeons don't grow on trees. |

My doctor told me that if it wasn't for his loyalty towards his patients, he'd retire. I do know he isn't accepting new patients, hasn't for some time.

quite simply american doctors will work for cash and off the network insurance companies that will basically ignore the obamacare and everyone will simply not buy insurance, pay the extra tax and work underground.
poor people will still get shit medical care and the lower middle class will go from good health care to the same shitty stuff the poor have. upper middle class will pay extra and still get good medical care. your wife should prepare to do general practice for cash and have a referral network to cash specialists for those who can afford it and a kiosk in her office where those who can't afford good care sign up for obamacare platinum for one year to hopefully get treated before they die. |

I say go general practice for cash. lower overhead, no paperwork, can develop a real practice with real patients and less headaches. less money, possibily, but dentists and plastic surgeons do very well in the same model. specialists making a fortune through insurance companies may be a dead model. everybody needs family practice, however. just never, ever do it for the government. |

No worries. When we go full blown communist, children will be selected at random and told they will go to medical school and we will have plenty of great doctors. Our gymnastics program will probably improve as well.

Only the rich will have good care, and it will be done in other countries, not the USA. |

View Quote Not one but two doctors that practiced where my Mother and Fathers doctor practices whom they have been seeing for over 15 years, up and quit practicing medicine dumping their patients on my parents doctor. Because of this instead calling and getting an appointment in 2-3 days it can take them up to 6 weeks to get in and see their doctor, if they can't wait they can see nurse practitioner some what earlier or have been advised to go to one of those emergency care clinics. I am afraid Obamacare is going to kill a whole lot of elderly in the US simply because they will no longer be able to see their doctors in a timely manner. |

If I was thinking about med school, I'd switch to becoming a veterinarian instead. |

View Quote Basically already happening, I forget the name of it but they have several medical practices in my area that get great reviews and work for cash. You pay "X" dollars a month and that gets you at home doctor visits, quality care and covers most medical procedures that can be done at your local doctor's office (sutures, exams, certain scans etc...) it does not cover you for major injuries or ER visits. They aren't underground, but they don't accept medical insurance, you pay them a monthly fee and get great care through that doctor's office. |

I provide IT support for area small businesses. And I can't tell you how many medical clients are gone because of ACA. Any of the small practices that haven't been gobbled up by the conglomerates with providers aged 50 or slightly over just simply packed up and retired early. Just in our family, we've lost 3 doctors that simply said "Im out."
They were already teetering with reduced payments from medicare/medicaid and increasing malpractice insurance premiums. ACA, EHR, etc just pushed them over the edge. Normally Im one of those "meh, survive or die in the marketplace" type of guys but these were good doctors that just simply had enough of the BS. And finding a good doc that you trust, etc. isn't an easy thing to find. |

In another post I mentioned how out of 8 doctor in my immediate area, 7 have retired. My doctor only has MWF hours and works the other two days in an urgent care facility.
If he didn't have four kids, I bet he'd retire too. It's a shame that the rats who started this mess will always have a doctor. |
