Popcorn rice with butter, salt and pepper.

With the soda probably about 75 cents.

You could have cut your meal cost in more than half by not having the soda.

Al pastor tacos is the perfect poors meal.

Pork: $1.99/lb
Tortillas: $.05 each
Cilantro: $0.99/bunch
Onion: $1.19/lb

I was at a point in the late 99s where I had $10 a week for food.

Eggs were $.50 a dozen, loaf of bread was a buck. Splurge on some cheese slices, and maybe some ground sausage if I came across a few spare bucks.

I still can't eat a fried egg sammich.

You're missing the ancho and guajillo chilies, the cumin, the garlic, the citrus (I like orange and pineapple for the marinade), the Mexican oregano, the smoked paprika and the achiote paste, but your point still stands and is otherwise well made.

Being poor doesn't mean you have to eat boring and/or processed junk food. But you do have to actually cook.

Though for most working-class families, doing tacos al pastor right (especially marinating and then grilling the pork properly) is going to be a weekend-only affair. But a pork shoulder is a lotta meat, so you could make a week's worth.

I buy it pre-marinaded. Right now, I’m focusing on perfecting lomo saltado, which is not cheap to make.

Hey, I've been truly poor! I have to wonder now if I really like bologna and mustard as much as I think I do, or if it's just an afterproduct of being broke as a younger guy.

In LA or TX? This stuff: https://shop.cajuncountryrice.com/products/cajun-country-popcorn-rice

I'd be surprised to see it in most grocery stores, outside of Louisiana or states adjacent (like Texas).

OK, so a long grain variant?  What puts the "popcorn in popcorn rice?

Nope, not LA or RX, I was at the east end of the redneck riviera, where fried mullet is a delicacy.

Eyeballing it, I'd go 200 calories for the rice (generously - let's say that's a cup worth), 20 for the soda (says so on the can ) and assume he's got a teaspoon of butter in there, for another 30-ish.

Let's call it 250.

Why don't you skip breakfast and lunch and do OMAD (one meal a day). Will save you money and you'll be much healthier.

Intermittent fasting will take some getting used to but it's quite easy. Start out skipping breakfast only. Have black coffee and alot of water. Then when you find it easy enough go ahead and try skipping Iunch as well.  You can have a good dinner and still save money.
