This can get out of hand quickly, given the low moral of the average Russian on the front. Hopefully it at least produces enough chaos that the Ukrainian army can make some big gains. Now's the time to unleash the big brigades they've been holding back and let them eat. What's between Wagner and Moscow currently? Cant be much of a force outside local defense forces and air power.

I am wondering if this confusion is a prelude for a Ukrainian offensive.

That would be interesting ploy and could pay off bigly. Ether way its going to have a effect IMHO. Let the misinformation fly and see what shakes out. I don't think it would take much to really cause a panic in the ranks that leads to a pivotal break thru.

The missile strike could have been a hit attempt on Prigozhin himself if the MOD thought he was there.

Easy scenario for me to believe is this is the case and Prigozhin has contacts in the MOD who tipped him off and making recordings as you suggest is pretty smart.
