And things like this are what happens when you aren't taking the best people for the job. This may have no bearing on this situation, but things like this are going to happen. Could be ATC, could be pilots, could be your surgeon, teacher, etc etc etc. This is how you rot a country from within.

True. No idea if this was a factor in this case but wanted to point out a potential possibility. Seems like this is becoming more common.

Probably. I passed all of the tests during the hiring process, and they passed me over anyway, so I gave up on it. I was hoping they gave it to vets that did it for the military, but apparently not.

ATC diversity hires?  This country needs to go back to hiring based on qualifications and stop worrying about the racial composition of their workforce.

Was it LGA or SFO that I read about here, where somebody got disoriented at night and tried to land on an taxiway with three or four airliners doing the walk to the active takeoff runway?

IIRC, the TOGO worked, and the descending a/c missed the rear a/c's vertical stab by like 50-100'.  One of those, "Gulp!" kind of things.

Maybe it was overseas?

Agree.   You would think that both aircraft may have been on the tower frequency and know about the other.  We need the audio to understand who was cleared for that runway at what time.

The aborting Fed EX aircraft was at 74 feet over the top of the SW plane before climbing.  The SW plane was showing at 5 feet directly under the fed ex plane.

Tail height on a 737 is 41 feet 2 inches!  So they were reporting a 69 foot altitude difference,  Minus the 41foot 2 inch tail on that altitude reporting,  That makes it a close call!

Around 27 feet separation.  That about as close as you can come to dying in that situation.  They felt that.  Imagine the wake turbulence of a large jet flying past you at the separation they had, I would imagine the hard climb the fed ex plane did mitigated that a bit.

Fuuuuu.  Sounds like SWA was slow on the go and ATC was a bit optimistic AND slow to realize the issue.

If that METAR is correct I am not sure why they were stacking so close.

Not unusual for ATC to ask for an expedite if they are busy, but damn.

Holey shit!

I know they are listing the call at 10:23 as from the tower.  Was it from the tower or was it the fed ex crew calling the SW aircraft to abort and calling "fed ex on the go"??

That controller took long enough to realize shit isnt going to work there.

like poster above says.  Looks like Southwest didnt get going when given the go ahead and were warned that 767 was 3 miles out.

Scary.

Wait, did the southwest flight continue to take off?

Why didn't the landing aircraft (FedEx) mention the SW plane cleared to take-off on the runway ahead of it.

That's what I got from the time stamps. ATC should've asked SWA if they were ready before clearing them.

im not sure two boeings in motion can get closer and not have at least one of them end up a flaming ball of scrap...

and I wonder what its like to for a loaded 767 to firewall the throttles and go viking...or as close as it can.

Pretty sure the comment from the fed ex crew at 9:20 was a polite way to say WTF!?  The controller was too asleep to recognize the bad situation that was shaping up.

The controller also never called for an expedited take off when he cleared the SW aircraft.  That said..  He told the SW crew that  there was a 767 on 3 mile.  So...

I wonder if the SW crew shit themselves, after the FedEx plane damn near melted the windshield.
