my cousin is interested in buying a small bore (under .30 cal) varmint gun that he can shoot out to long ranges (400 plus yards)  i reccomended a .204, just looking for suggestions.

Longer ranges I would go with the aforementioned 25-06, or a 6mm or 6.5mm caliber.  .223 will work as well with heavier bullets.  I'm thinking .204 would be a bit light in any kind of crosswind, not that it's incapable of reaching out that far.

I like 243 and 270 but they may be overkill for what your looking for

.25-06 should be more than enough though.

For ranges to 400 yards the 22-250 is the standard by which all varmint calibers are judged.    I have whacked a couple beyond 400 with mine, and one at 537 yars confirmed with a range finder..

thanks guys, how is the recoil on a 25-06 compared to a 22-250?

At 400+ yards 25-06 with a 100 grain nosler ballistic tip will out shoot any 223, 22-250, or 243.

Edit:  There is more recoil than a 22-250, more like a 308 imo.
